Reported 643am on Slater Butte just north of and above Happy Camp and it exploded on GOES17 IR.
Happy Camp is right in the bullseye of this with the current WX.

So, I must admit - still feels so strange to barely bat an eye these days when a fire like this burns 22K acres in 12 hours (according to a post on the IA thread).

I totally agree. The Klamath burns 34 square miles of timber in 12 hours and nobody notices. Is this the new normal?

It’s not the new normal. This is the beginning of a sliding scale. The change of the last ten years(give or take) is only just beginning of a scale that is sliding in a direction of hotter air, ground, and water. The hotter air can hold more moister and still have a low RH, the live fuel and soil moistures will continue to plummet for decades. The rivers, lakes and oceans will get warmer as well. The new normal will be when all the vegetation finishes changing, adapting, or being replaced by different species altogether… many decades from now.

This thing has burned well into Oregon, currently knocking on the back door of Cave Junction, and the Oregon Caves Natl Monument.
RAWS Slater Butte has not let up since last night. Consistent E roughly 30G50 give or take since midnight.
RAWS Crazy Peak would be just west of the fire, showing a 180 wind shift from north to south late afternoon, as well as further north at Illinois Valley Airport.

I’m sure when CA called OR to advise them the fire had crossed into OR, they said “thanks, good luck, gotta run”!
Heavy structure loss on Indian Creek north of town. The entire town is under mandatory evac’s. Very few resources, mostly local government engines from the county. Strong and erratic winds all day, still blowing when I left at 2000.
It appears sometime after 1 am another new fire started east of the Slater. Spotting seems unlikely source given the offshore winds. Looks pretty big on morning satellite…
