Grapevine area:
Vehicle fire into the grass: 30 acres, MROS
CONS: There are only a few roads ( more like two tracks) that access that area. It has some very steep areas. The valley heating up will push the fire south and uphill. Early start will make a long burning period.
PROS: it’s usually a MTZ response so the LPF will join soon. LAC and the big red wave will not be far behind. It’s burned so many times it’s a grass fire until the very top.
150 acres, moderate ros
Winds have swapped from the north and it’s picking up a bit.
Fox field is close-by for the fixed wing, and LAC, KRN, and Cal-fire helicopters are taking advantage of the CA Aqueduct at the base of the Grapevine so the air show is a fast paced bucket brigade.
Depending on how it goes, don’t be surprised if CHP takes out the truck lanes on the southbound side for rolling rocks and apparatus staging.
I don’t see the LACO response on pulse point. Did they stop showing on mutual aid calls?
LACO - SENDING FULL BRUSH RESP
LA COUNTY E477, CAMP CREW 8-1, 9-3, CREW 11-1, CREW 11-2, CREW 12-4, WATER TENDER 156, P77, DOZER 8, COPTER 18, HELITANKER 47.
LACO CREW 12-4
LACO CREW 9
LACO BATT 6
Might not have all the crews correct
Kern doesn’t use pulse point so I don’t follow them. Not sure if that helps.
ICP is at the old Dennys at the foot of the grapevine
Kern actually does. Looking at it now.
Understand, but not for dispatch comms. They switched to a different system and API.
It was looking like it might hold on that two track on the left shoulder but it did get across it.
Edit, one of the LATs just made a drop on it.
The next usual spot to make a stand is Dejier Road when it “should” lose its wind+terrain advantage.
After releasing some aircraft, 4 tankers have been requested back to the fire.
Yup, and just requested a relief ATGS for 1655 hours. Did sound more promising as long as the current dozer line holds, if not, then maybe a possible no divert on the aircraft.
@1549: ATGS also estimated 500 acres with a MROS.
@1550: Implementing a Degier (pronounced De-Jay) structure group.
I know KRN can have some big grass fires but I was a little surprised to see this one outpace and or chew through the retardant like it has.
I can understand. That area has been a bugger during heavier grass years. The grass gets matted down since the cattle don’t graze there. The slope and angle really make it tough on A/T to make effective drops. Look at the run they have to make on the way out after a drop. They need to stay high and make a hard left— or drop higher and it just mists. They do as best and safest as they can, but it’s not very conducive to anything but rotor wing. The side hill can be un-nerving for type-6’s and rolling rocks are a huge issue (personal experience). We’d usually catch it on top where conditions are more conducive to stopping it. That mid-slope stuff is ugly there.
They announced that the forward rate of spread was stopped last night and kind of re-announced it this morning, but there are three helicopters and three air tankers overhead right now a with the firewatch ISR and the ATGS. Maybe we’ll get a progress report since there seems to be a lots of drift/residual smoke..
They have a slop over at the moment
