No. They can be off a 1/2 mile in “accurate” conditions. Sometimes they can pick up the heat in the drifting smoke column.
That said, Huntington structure group just said
“Fire is heading east still, on both sides of Huntington road. Going to fire a line between the lake and the road to stop the eastward spread below the road. To protect the marina area.”

Sounds like it is past Cedar Crest, I believe they were doing active structure protection at Cedar Crest hours ago.

“Fire is also still on both sides of 168, heading east, and will run toward China peak before too long.
Easterly Fire progression on both sides of the lake about the same right now”.

All those dots mean is that there was a heat source detected somewhere within the resolution of the sensor. Depending on the sensor, you are talking a kilometer or more of imprecision, depending on angle of capture and amount of heat in the column, and probably other factors.

Thanks for the information. Most helpful.

Sometimes the MODIS and VIIRs detections are off by many miles. Any place the dots are widely spaced in a regular linear pattern is suspect. This usually happens when there is a large column. The satellite looks at a wide swath, and sometimes the objective is low on the horizon of the scan, so heat in the column throws off their calculation of the location.

I try not to respond to questions on this thread because it is info only. I will PM you. Paulito. I heard same traffic. Sounds like they think it will envelope both north and South side of Huntington but he knows what his trigger is and is ready to fire to protect China Peak. Agreed progression on both sides (north and south) same based on his traffic. GIS heat detection is indicative. If you want actually IR lines you will have to wait for tomorrow mornings Op briefing.

The only thing I can think of was the air was cleaner for the ships to get in and out. That’s a ways east.

There are several spot fires south of Highway 168 and Cressman. There are several spot fires in Blue Canyon which eventually will burn all the way to the Kings River if conditions don’t change. With the fire pushing west it has a potential to make it to the outskirts of the basecamp within a day or two.

Pushing West… That will be into SRA shortly.

Winds aren’t real strong anywhere else. Mountain rest raws shows 36 mph gust but just down the road is 8-15. Mountain rest right now is pretty close to column.
