A handful of Rosa equipment are getting demobbed for reassignment to the Canyon
Looks like the most recent Fireguard polygon is SW of Gilmour, about 4 and a half miles from the heel as the crow flies.
Night HELCO and Coulson QRF are on scene now. Will commence night flying when tankers leave.
MRB (Mobile Retardant Base) also ordered for QRF use. Setup at LACoFD training center at Del Valle. Night time retardant coming in hot.
I was on a wild fire in that area in1969. It crossed Hwy 99 and we finally caught it just north of the Sheriff Detention facility. It did a lot of damage too. BUT now those night flying copters will REALLY help to tame this fire.
The helicopters will definitely help, along with the nighttime humidity recovery that has finally started.
The QRF copters are still working and from the ground it seems as if they ar really accomplishing the task of cooling this wild fire down. Daylight might find a whole different scene than we saw earlier today.
Copters were finished with the night assignment at about 0320 and are now back at their landing sites. The brightness caused by flames has subsided considerably. Now lets hope the day shift will find a suitable working environment too.
The fire has burned an estimated 4,856 acres and remains 0% contained. Firefighters continue to battle the blaze as it spreads east toward the community of Castaic in Los Angeles County. Throughout the evening and into the early morning hours, firefighting aircraft made repeated water and retardant drops in an effort to slow the fireâs advance and support crews working on the ground.
The Ventura County Fire Department and Los Angeles County Fire Department are operating in unified command, in close coordination with the Ventura County Sheriffâs Office, Los Angeles County Sheriffâs Department, and other cooperating local, state, and federal agencies. Together, they are actively engaged in developing and executing a coordinated, long-term strategy to contain and suppress the Canyon Fire.
Cameras are pretty quiet right now. Iâve not seen any heat signatures yet, but with all the open line as daytime heating progresses and RH lowers and any wind things will likely get active. Sounds like they are actively planning contingencies for Castaic area. Hopefully the night copters did some good taking some heat out of it.
Sure looks better than I anticipated too. Those night crews and copters accomplished a lot.
Anyone have the IAP or data packages from the mapping flights? Doesnât seem like this fire is on the NIFC FTP server site yet
Hearing reports of two spots outside the line, air attack is getting tankers started.
Any word on a CF or Fed Team or are they keeping it in house?
They did a kick ass job. They both have the abilities to keep in house. I donât see why they wouldnât, unless they need a larger order than current access.
I posted this in the IA thread but I feel the Q&A is usually more interactive for folks so hereâs a duplicate.
Please note Stone Creek Rd shows as Oak Creek on my map.
Lots of Dozer work done last night some direct and lots of indirect which is currently holding as fire bumps it in various places.
As the column was very active before sundown it cast embers and spots into drainages where the terrain is steep and fuels are intermittent.
This cuppled with shading from the column and night conditions resulted in what appears to be a dirty burn but in fact is just scattered spots near indirect containment lines.
I attached screenshot of the area that I was working so aside from traffic and visuals as I came off the line the verification of what Iâm writing is specific to Div P as of 0800 this morning.
You will also see a picture representing the embercast into the drainage that is unburned but within the dozer line.
The blue pins are dozer line along the ridge that stretches from the end of Stonecreek Rd to Loma Verde at the peak closest to the High School. Where it hits the peak the black pin is solid edge and heading north from there its mostly direct dozer line to Romero Canyon Road to the north. There are few pockets of green eybrows near Romero Canyon road that are still cleaning up and are concerning due to the winds yesterday and the tight drainage that runs through that area.
Heading south through the blue pins is where the embercast is sitting in the drainage west of the dozer line all the way to Stone Creek where 2 strike teams of Charlieâs linked the line down towards Desert Shadow Dr and chased it towards Div S to tie into Hasley Canyon area.
I believe a big concern is the indirect stuff that can heat up in west of the dozer line and slopping over as well as the stuff furthest north near Romero Canyon.
Little to no handcrews available last night on the line so getting boots up those dozer lines will be pertinent today
Lots of resources that were requested have been canceled. Solid work.
MOD note.
