Cal Fire Fire Captain and FAE hire for 2025

Wondering if anyone else got the “eligibility Letter” email today? If so what documents was it wanting to send in to the attached email. From my understanding it wanted our drivers license, EMT, and Cpat card?

I’ve been reading through the post and I was wondering if anyone had an answer on getting over to calfire as a lateral or just how or what I could come over as.

I worked 5 years in the fed, and have been at a fire department for 10 years currently an Engineer.

Would love some information on how I can come over to calfire and what that looks like.

Thank you

Here’s a link for the Open Captain testing. See if you meet the MQ’s. Engineer is definitely a possibility for you. You can find your way around CalHR’s website for that one.

Perfect thank you, ya I meet the requirements for the captains position with my current time. Do they have a lateral process, or would it be me just filling out a normal application in the captains open exam process

What you just described is the lateral process. Follow the instructions for the open captain test.

It’s not necessarily a “lateral” though it is similar. It’ll be an open list position which is part of the normal app. Once calHR confirms you meet minimum requirements, you will apply to take the test. Pass the test and you’re on the list. The job announcement will clear it up pretty well. You can always call the hiring hotline. They’re surprisingly helpful trying to navigate the system as a candidate or new employee.

I did this a few years ago, but i was already a captain for 15+ years. It was pretty painless other than having to go through a basic firefighter academy for the 3rd time at 54 years old.

If i remember right, double check this, now you can skip the academy if you’ve been to an academy that meets the National Fire Academy standard. Double check this, too, maybe get to skip if you’ve passed California Firefighter JAC. It’s an issue if you’ve already passed it and a department tries to get JAC money reimbursement for duplicate training.

Everybody please add to this if i’m off. I got out right as this changed and only heard bits and pieces.
