HT red and Yellow Air
- Bob Kelty.
“Red” was the tac channel 151.220 which became the only CDF air-ground in later years until they added the ones we had now. I believe CDF 1 was the only repeater channel at some point. Notice how the air tacs still had colors in this sheet.
The Motorola “brick.”
CDF Tulare engines went o San Diego. Ca]averas to Orange. I was a Foreman at Ramona. We hosted a Dozer/Transport and 5 Tulare engines.
Well we all know TUU is only good for move-up’s…
When I was about nine years old in 2006, I witnessed the Plunge Fire easily burn 400 acres in the San Bernardino National Forest south of Running Springs in the dead of a freezing January full of Santa Ana wind events. By early February of that year, I watched the Sierra Fire explode across 10,000 acres of the Cleveland National Forest –again– propelled by Santa Ana winds. By all indications, fire “season” that year was viewed very much as already being very touch-and-go. They were anticipating it to be the worst. But by March, wetting spring rains throughout the month and into April subdued the season well into June. Things really didn’t kick off again until July of that year. And by the end, the fire season was relatively subdued compared to the years that followed (aside from the devastating Esperanza Fire anyway.)
The TLDR of this is that things are always subject to change but that fire season still very much has the opportunity to calm down once the spring rains of March and April really kick in. If that somehow doesn’t happen then, sure, this could be an historically horrible year as if it isn’t already such. But it’s all up in the air, literally.
I recall officials saying “fire season is now year round” when the Griffith Park and Catalina Island Fire exploded in May of 2007. But in fairness, 2007 was a definitely-terrible year for wildfires in California.
yeah I was on that fire during NIRA with my Captain in Turnouts on the side of the hill. the morse fire at PEbble beach in May 2007 was bad too
You mean the one that came with paper, pencil and string so you could write the message, tie it to the “brick” and throw it across the canyon to relay the message?
Pebble Beach fire was in 1987
That was the Morris Fire in PB
I think just like we have four types of “seasons” when we discuss weather, we now have several types of fire seasons.
Lake - Napa unit in the mid 80’s when I was there:
That is fancier then in 1970 when I was in Lake county.
Local, red, and state net?
Local, region (was district) and state.
I think state was what we now call CDF Command 1
Local was the same as it is now?
What was region/district used for?
And what about tac? Only on HTs?
Don’t forget the GE four buttons, it also had white net
Or the FC 33 card, left with the IC before you left
The good old days. 1987 first year and assigned to a international model 9 that was a little different from the older model 9’s it was lifted and did an outstanding job fighting fire over the years. I miss it.
