In case any ground pounders wander in here wondering what HIPAA is, it means “No Personally Identifiable Information about patients is to be divulged without express permission from the patient or patient’s parent or guardian if the patient is under 18 years of age.” This means no names, no Department/Station/Camp names, or pictures with faces.
Department or unit names probably don’t qualify as PHI. Also, HIPAA applies to those who bill the federal government for medical services (Medicare). Many wildland agencies do not. Although, in California there are some state privacy laws that apply as well.
Just got to not over do it on the liquid IV…my son home for R&R straight to ER for a kidney stone lol…they even joked on the crew one of us is gonna get a kidney stone. Now they read the label.
Im in the ER and I said kiddo, so you either have appendicitis (RLQ pain) or maybe a kidney stone. But how would you have a kidney stone with all the water you drink on the crew…he just is in so much pain and dead pans me…mutters I think its the liquid IV. Cant make this up lol. Lesson learned.
AJ, glad he is better. We have seen this on numerous occasions. The other serious symptom we have seen is severe nausea and vomiting. ORS is a tool for our tool box, not a replacement for water. Stay safe.
I have not heard of electrolyte solutions or sports drinks causing Kidney stones in firefighters. Are these rare cases of firefighters that already have a history of forming stones? If anyone can post some case studies or any info on this please post .
Thanks
