1991 Oakland Hills Tunnel Fire Revisit

Earlier this week @pyrogeography had Tim Chavez on and they were talking about the make up of Palisades and quite frankly what a ton of foothill communities look like. One comment Tim made was that ok we rebuild and to better fire resilient standards with construction to withstand ember intrusion etc but he mentioned the creep back of the urban vegetation. I thought what does the Tunnel fire look like after 34 years. Take a drive in Google Street View. Here is the KML, sorry cant upload it here.

@DogBone yes it was stunning and I really was not surprised but what does it take? I mean I guess the same can be said for rebuilding in Florida, the hurricanes are coming back.

How about the rebuilding of New York Beach front homes as well as New Jersey beachfront homes. Some have been rebuilt 3 times by FEMA Flood Insurance.

Yup the crazy thing about private land fuel is well at least someone is in control of it but I have said it before if you live in a tight space subdivision if this is not done at a community level and your the only one well you are probably gonna lose out.

Just like the homes in the 91/Green River area, how many times have the homes at the top of the 241/91 subdivision have had fire impinging on them. Its all grown back again below them and that’s landscaping not natural brush growth.

Searching for a map (newspapers? archive reports?) of the 196 structures lost in the 1993 Kinneloa fire…
