Alert Wildfire - Future Cams?

Curious about future plans to expand the Alert Wildfire Network/Cams? Must be someone out there with the inside scoop

Is there a happy list of mountain tops that are in the works and potential target dates?

If you’re part of the team that’s pulling this all together - nice work! Having spent many seasons as a fire lookout back in the day, http://www.alertwildfire.org is fantastic.

Thanks in advance for the intel.

Cheers

I am not an official spokesperson for AlertWildfire but am involved with the work.
The Seismology Lab at Univ. of Nevada Reno operates the AlertWildfire Network. That network is closely aligned with the HP WREN network run by folks at Scripps of UC San Diego.
The expansion of the network is being done by both Scripps and UNR although most of the new areas will be equipped by UNR. UNR currently has requests for well over 1000 additional installations and the expectation is that requests will reach 1500 including many locations in Oregon, Washington and other states.
This is obviously a lot of work and so it will take some time for this roll-out.

In addition to more installations the way in which the cameras and data from the cameras are to be used will be improved. Specifically, there is a group of folks (which I am part of) centered at UC Berkeley/ Lawrence Berkeley Lab
https://fuego.ssl.berkeley.edu/
that is organizing the triangulation among cameras, developing machine learning and related computational capabilities to fuse the real-time imagery with other data sources for early detection, and for estimation of rates of spread. To optimize the value of the camera network higher bandwidth and massive data storage/computation increases are being planned/discussed. It is fairly likely that a good fraction of the computation will eventually be put out at camera installations which can reduced the required bandwidth.
Bottom line: the value of the AlertWildfire system will be increasing dramatically.

Thanks, Ballofire

Appreciate the reply and the info on Fuego!

Fascinating…

You are welcome.
