57 years ago today 12 responders lost their lives and 10 others were injured fighting the Loop Fire near Sylmar. T’s & P’s to all of the family’s & survivors of this deeply tragic incident.

There were several notable lessons learned from this fire - all of which came at too high of a price. Two extremely notable and impactful changes were the Downhill Line Construction Checklist & Radios/Better com’s on crews going forward.

Whenever you see entire crews with radios AND wherever you happen to be working downhill with fire below - pause to reflect on the Loop & El Cariso IHC..

I remember it well, although didn’t remember the date. I had returned home to STF, from a SoCal fire, just a week or so before.
