Three SEATs doing work on the ElDorado today. a fast rotation to Big Bear Lake and back.
From the BDF FB page…
“Fire Boss” Single Engine Air Tanker (SEAT)
The sound of helicopters dipping water from Big Bear Lake is a common fire season occurrence, but the sights of fixed-wing aircraft skimming the lake at 60 MPH is a little unusual in Southern California.
These amphibious aircraft are called Fire Boss Air Tankers. The AT-802F Fire Boss scooper air tanker can land on and scoop water from nearby lakes, rivers and reservoirs. Yesterday (Sept 20) an estimated 40,000 gallons of water was dropped on the El Dorado Fire. It can hold 800 gallons of water in each pass and can also be filled with standard fire retardant if landing on a traditional airstrip.
A 60’ wingspan powered by a 1,600 horsepower Pratt & Whitney turboprop engine allows the Fire Boss to haul payload and maneuver in mountainous environments.
In firefighting jargon, this is a Type 3 SEAT; Type 3 meaning less than 1,000 gallons, SEAT meaning Single Engine Air Tanker, however due to their rapid fill and drop cycle, they are an effective tool in fighting fire.

These three aircraft would normally operate across the Canadian Shield region of Canada but are assisting firefighters on the El Dorado Fire.

SEATS only carry up to 800 gallons unless they changed to guide.

The variables determine actual Fireboss load. Density altitude, wind speed and usable area play into the pilot and aircraft ability.

Haven’t heard much about this one for days - but might have been a sleeper spot. Can’t tell if inside the lines or not?

Area has been burning out a heavy fuel loaded bowl for several days up in the wilderness. Should be all burned underneath it.
