Just looked at today’s NICC Sit Rep. CTD for Shelly is $75.8M. Pretty expensive for a 16K ac fire.

There were a lot of homes threatened at one point.

You have to take into account fuel type and terrain. Nothing is easy on the Klamath. It’s not 17k acres of grass oak woodland.

Also a lot of OES resources were called and CF portal to portal adds up quick

Klamath is Big Country and is no joke. A ton of rehab after suppression is going on too.

That is a lot of money!

Thank goodness it wasn’t 100,000 acres!
In round figures that could be 380M!

All of the tools in the toolbox for Wildland Fire suppression are very expensive. No doubt.
Doing nothing is also expensive when we start to add up loss. Loss of timber. Loss of your property.
Loss of property is causing quite a bit of a stir in purchasing insurance these days. If you can find it! You never know but 75.8M may be a good deal considering the above?

So if you do the math it’s something around $4500 per acre. Put in those terms it’s not actually as big as it seems.

And the Dixie Fire of 2021 cost almost $662.00 per acre…

The dixie fire was also burning 1 acre every couple seconds on multiple days which would reduce cost per acre dramatically. Cost per acre should not be the concern. California was 44 billion over budget last year and will most like be more this year. Protect life, property then infrastructure and count the beans later.

Anyway, back to the fire.

Having two separate teams with two complete camps might be a contributing factor……
