Thats some jedi/next level shiznit right there!
Good stuff!!
Great report and to your point on the livestreamâŚif folks are going to live like this its inevitable that they are going to have a bad outcome. For every fire you put out you kick the can down the road, it will come one day.
I cannot answer wherther or not LAFD uses TICs in a wildland setting.
What I can tell you is that even 1/2" drywall is enough to keep most handheld TICs from seeing a smoldering fire behind it. My former agency had several structure fire rekindles due to that.
I have successfully used a handheld TIC to lead a handcrew in more efficient mopup at night, but stuff underground would he easy to miss.
Sitting with this comment that i do not disagree with there are a few things that keep flashing inside my head.
1, Imo, when stating the fire problem and inevitable outcomes in this way it makes it sound (to the layperson at least) like 100% ownership for bad outcomes is on the home owner/renter/person living in the structure. Because some would/have said âjust dont live thereâ problem solved.
2, When we say âif were going to live like thisâ we really need to expand upon that going forward. What i mean is that âweâ need to do more to teach humans outside of firefighting that structures are just another fuel model - the same fire characteristics apply (flammability, chemical content, horizontal continuity & vertical arrangement etc) should be looked at as an extension of the fuel types that surround the structures/communities - because thats how they react under the right conditions.
3, I cant help but wonder why we as a society/community allow for corporations/manufacturers to continue the use of flammable materials in construction and for flawed community layout/design (perpetuates known bad past practices) that will be detrimental when the next fire starts? More hardening of structures and places to shelter AND evacuation routes that do not allow for congestion would be game changing in our fire prone/high population density places.
We can sniff / observe biosignatures and different spectrumâs of light on distant planets. We can make rockets land on a barge in the ocean. We can split the atom BUT we cant seem to figure out how to break the cycle of doing the same bad things in the same dangerous places when it comes to how we design and build the places we live.
Ive come to feel like all of us are being let down by the system in such dishonest ways - for example there are plans for continuity of government (COG) during cataclysmic / atomic situations - why cant we come to value the rest of us as much as our govât values the top elite in govât & defense? âTheyâ shouldnât be the only ones with a safe place to go when the u kno what hits the fan.
I bring up that example - not to be political OR pick a fight - I bring that example up bcuz its the biggest example i know of where tech & building practices come together to actually protect/shield humans from dangers of fire et al. I see the wui situation especially in high population areas as a problem that requires that same level of attention as we give to COG. This is beyond nuts!
Allot of coffee this a.m. sorry for the long rant..
@wfapdude we live in AmericaâŚthe land of FAFO.
I do not thing we have a building construction problem. There are plenty of tools out there to keep embers from getting in your home, we have non combustible roofs now.
We have an ornamental landscaping problem. We have a âwhat do you mean i should not build a wood deck over the brush canyonâ problem.
This is not rocket science, there are news story after news story, outreach by Non profits and government to the community about wildfire risk. Fire is not new to california at all.
We are a civilization of it wont happen to me or the fire dept. will come and be successful.
And let me be clear the homeowners own 100% of the outcome.
@Fish thats why they have a thermal capable UAS fleet. I am in 100% agreement using a hand held thermal sensor is not a great tool for analyzing heat post mop up. A camera on a drone on a flight mission is the tool for thermal detection on a small wildfire.
10/4! I hear you.
I appreciate your perspective and opinions even though i donât totally agree w/ all of them OR see things exactly as you do.
As i type this iâm reminded that wind, ornamental veg & roofing materials mater not when one of my neighbors leaves the stove or bbq on at the adjacent apartment and it burns all 4 units that are connected before responders can fully extinguish the fire. When that same thing happens in the middle of a wind event the problem(s) becomes bigger! Living in multi-story high rise building also comes with issues that do not require wildfires to be bad.
Its my fault for choosing to live here for sure. Or is it?! Theres allot that factors into where people rent/own/dwell. In my case i dont own and its the only place available to me/my situation in a ruralâish community with limited opportunities for housing. Same issues exist in places like palisades - even thought the economics are different. btw, I have zero say in making fire safe changes in/around where i live.
Just to be clear - in my previous comment iâm advocating/wishing for a continuity of community plan - for more than just fire events/disasters. Fire is not our only problem despite most thinking it is thanks to a relatively quiet (so far) Holocene. Iâd really really like to see some of the fed, state & local tax that i pay go towards preparedness / planning / implementation of project(s) like that. Our roads, towns & city layouts were not made with disaster mitigation, human survivability or 1st responder access in mind. That could/should all be addressed for the better imo. But, instead i see time after time a push to build back mostly the same as it ever was. That seems criminal at this point to me - given what we know will happen in time again & again.
As a kid born in Orcutt - near Vandenburg - iâve always known that our missiles live in stronger shelters than most humans do - on many levels that reality has become as understandable as it is perplexing to me at this stage in my life.
Sorry, ive bloviated enoughâŚ
The property tax loss for the city and county are going to be devastating.
For sure and certain
Some news from the kindness department worth sharing.
A not so small amount of $ donated to help the fire victims. Way to go old farts (and not so old ritchie faulkner) / british heavy metal icons! Btw, why so grabby on Faulkners guitar fire dude?! ![]()
Looking/sounding like this guy will no longer be the prosecutor of this case - or maybe he will?!
WTF?!
Just when you think this story cant get worse - somehow it friggin does!
And, i just cant get over the its a re-kindle but it was not a re-kindle b.s.
How the hell does that make sense to anyone, let alone a fire person, let alone a chief officer?!
That statement is about as clear as a bigfoot video! I feel bad for the rank/file of their department.
I was abit taken back reading that and decided to post it. If remotely true i would not want to be in that BCâs shoes.
Clicking on that link brought this to my feed just now..
What a ness! Will be intrresting to see where this goes and the likelyhood of mudslinging in all directions.
The state? That part of Topanga state park is in LRA and the park DEFINITELY doesnât have the resources to do that. Also if a BC is telling there crew to leave after they say itâs still hot thats a pretty risky attitude. If these texts are real we should have been hearing about that instead of seeing thousands of peoples lives upended.
Itâs almost impossible to know what the truth is anymore. So much subterfuge. Who do you believe and donât believe. A lot of stuff being thrown out there, you have five version of the same event how do you know what the right one is. Some actual facts about the events that happened would be nice but this day and age is that even possible. Maybe I missed it but why is it taking a year for a lot of these things to come out. This cast a bad image on all Calif Firefighters.
