Highway 166 is NOW OPEN. Construction at various locations will result in flagging operations with one-way reversing traffic control led by a pilot car. Travelers should expect delays of up to one hour.
Current Situation: The completed strategic firing operation on the north side has been successful in stopping the forward progress of the fire. All spot fires, started by hot embers crossing the fire line, were contained overnight within the planned contingency lines. Crews will work in the Garcia Wilderness over the next few days to extinguish hot spots in areas of concern. Water-dropping aircraft will be used as needed to eliminate these hotspots.
In the southern part of the fire, crews continue to patrol the area, and efforts to repair damage have started. The immediate efforts will be focused on reducing the risk of soil erosion on constructed hand and dozer lines, roads, trails, and other areas utilized during the firefighting efforts.
With the most challenging phase of fire operations now complete, overall staffing will be scaled back. The surge in resources over the past week was critical to the firing operation’s success. Now, firefighters and equipment will be made available to respond to new emergencies elsewhere as they become available.
Weather: Temperatures will cool while humidity increases into this weekend, with no precipitation expected. Gustier winds are possible Friday night through Saturday night.
