1300 update: fire still pretty active in the bottom, it is staying on the western aspect of East Ridge, holding at the ridges on top, and heading in the direction of Watertrough Camp, which isn’t marked on the map above, but is on the eastern edge of Sec 27 where the springs are on the Haynes Delight trail.

Hazy smoke starting to break the blue sky over Tomhead and Lazyman visible in Red Bluff.

edit: H514 working sling missions out of Covelo

From MNF Twitter: The East Fire is estimated at 100 acres. Fire crews are being shuttled in by helicopter and addt’l crews have been ordered. Crews are making progress utilizing existing trails in the wilderness to confine the fire along the East Ridge.

I’m on this incident as part of the Forest T-3 IMT. We are managing 2 fires the Haynes and East. Both are in the Yolla Bolly Wilderness Area. The Haynes is in full suppression and is at 23 acres and 90% contained. The East is in a confinement strategy for firefighter safety due to it is burning in an old burn scare and there is a heavy dead standing as well as dead and down component. It is at 306 acres with 0% containment. There are 4 Shot crews, 2 Fire Use crews, and 2 Helitack crews on these fires. They are being logistically supplied by helicopter. For the most part the fire is consuming the dead and down fuels and cleaning up the forest.

Thanks @captmack for the update. It’s been fun listening to morning briefings done over MNF Fire Net, lots of praise yesterday for job well done, goals met/exceeded, and getting a lot of training opportunities on the fire as well. Haven’t seen smoke make it over the ridge into the valley in a few days now. Sounds like copter 514 released this morning back to the TNF. Copter 512 still on, working between the fire, Alder Springs, and Orland Helibase.

Just so everyone is clear, this is not a done deal just yet. But it has burned into a real patchy area with not a lot of receptive fuel to carry fire. It will be monitored with a Fire Use Crew to keep it within the established indirect lines. It may end up needed the Type 3 Team again if it wakes up, mostly for the logistical issues of supporting a remote fire from the air.

There’s a lot of summer left for it to “wake up”.

Awesome. More time for it to do good ecological work up in a remote wilderness. Great year for it to happen too.
