Primarily wetland habitat with heavy tules. ABC7 News had a copter above it earlier shooting video.
Every time this island burns it brings up the discussion around who is responsible for extinguishment.
Well… pretty certain that this one’s not an NV-HTF incident
(Just being snarky - not trying to derail the thread with politics and/or opinions)
You would think either US or California Fish and Feathers would have some ownership…
Would be a great location for a 234 class…just saying.
Definitely not in SRA. Also, not in a local fire district. Unprotected.
Years past unprotected defaults to state fire marshal
Unprotected land falls back on the county government and not the state.
Hey 4 between Discovery Bay and Stockton is unprotected and fires fall on CalTrans
It falls under SRA. Don’t know about currently, but years ago Oakley/Knightsen used to respond to the Island. You had to attention to the tides. The old ferry ramp got steep at a low tide.
If there is a Life safety threat then Stockton responds to that entire stretch. For a fire with no threat we usually dumped a tank of water then got told to go home. Every once in a while we got Calfire to respond and they would handle, but that was rare. Never saw caltrans lol
It’s definitely not SRA. There’s no SRA for miles in any direction and an island in the delta that’s primarily a mud bog of peat and tule reeds would have a hard time meeting the definition of grazing land.
It also wouldn’t serve as a good location for a 234 class as it takes a ferry to get there, it’s not conducive to that type of teaching environment and it’s just plain muddy.
Surrounded by Delta Smelt habitat that no longer has any there. All the smelt now are being kept and raised at UC Davis by USFW.
DPA maps show direct protection provider is local. LRA.
