What’s @norcal74 have to say about it?
A few thoughts…
Boundary level winds associated with the vort lobe that is causing the cumulous buildups.
That area can be a convergence zone where up valley winds meet terrain and often form cumulous , the up valley winds are being channeled into the Shasta drainage and rising over the terrain, they then meet the outflow of the cumulous build up and you get a cool air.. warm(ish) air scenario. The smoke is being pushed up the drainage and meets the outflow winds and you get the sharp demarcation.
I had an interesting discussion with Cliff Mass once about the Feather River Canyon and the Jarbo Wind effect. We discussed the phenomena and I offered some of my hypothesis.. he is a very well known climatologist and his suggestion was that there was just not enough RAWS to come up with anything more than anecdotal.
In this case I really do think it has to do with either the circulation in the upper atmosphere from the vort lobe triggering the cumulous or the interaction in the convergence zone between smoke.. wind and outflows.
We might get an answer once the sun sets and the storms loose their punch..
Crews were able to go direct is the spot fires over Div Delta last night with the help of CalFires night water droppers.
They also picked up a few spots (50x50) in Div Mike from their burn along the primary line.
All of the spots they got yesterday are holding as of this morning.
