The Sierra National Forest is working to contain the Round Wildfire on the Bass Lake Ranger District

Clovis CA, February 8, 2020 – Sierra National Forest (SNF) officials continue to work on containing a wildfire that started from pile burning operations on the Ferguson Fire Pile burning project Thursday, February 6th within the Bass Lake Ranger District.

The fire is located north of the 5S25 road and 5S03 junction east of Roundtree Saddle and west of Crow Peak. It is currently approximately 15 acres in size, and is staffed with fire personnel from Sierra National Forest and Cal-Fire Madera, Mariposa, Merced Unit.

Hazardous conditions for fire fighters include steep terrain and heavy fuel loads created by recent tree mortality and fire killed vegetation from the Oliver Fire in 2008. The fire is being fully suppressed at this time.

Forest staff have coordinated with the Mariposa County Air Pollution Control District on the status of the fire. Localized smoke impacts may be felt in Ponderosa Basin, Bootjack, Oakhurst, Fish Camp, Sugar Pine and Awahnee.

For regional information about air quality, smoke conditions, and health effects, visit www.valleyair.org or visit www.airnow.gov.

Visitors to the forest may see smoke, active fire, and firefighters during the next few days, and are asked to drive slowly and carefully as they enjoy the Forest.

I thought it looked like it became more than just a pile burn last night. There wasn’t an inversion last and it was active for a February fire. It was visible from my location near auberry in Fresno county at 10pm.
