One fire that then ignited another is producing two plumes of smoke in the skies east of Pinecrest Lake in the Stanislaus National Forest. Fire officials report that both blazes are about a quarter acre in size. The flames broke out along Dodge Ridge Road near Crabtree Road and are moving at a slow rate of spread with no structures threatened. Additionally, they add that the fires are on rough terrain and cannot be easily reached on foot. Aircraft have been dropping retardant and water on the blazes.
Update at 4:25 p.m.: Stanislaus National Forest fire officials have called in additional CAL Fire resources to help battle a blaze east of Pinecrest Lake. The flames broke out along Dodge Ridge Road near Crabtree Road east of Pinecrest Lake in Tuolumne County. There is still no word regarding the fire’s size or the flames’ rate of spread or whether any structures are threatened.

Your latest post states the cause is under investigation, while an earlier post said “escaped campfire”. Has something changed? I believe I also saw something elsewhere that also said escaped campfire. I got the impression at the time that announcement was based on radio traffic.
Very often source info from dispatches is wrong. This is true with fires, medicals, etc.
Investigators will follow up with scene assessment, interviews and a full investigation before releasing an official cause.
There is a reason firefighters are trained to not tell people not involved with the fire any information having to do with cause, especially early dispatch info. That is how bad information gets out.
To keep it on topic, good to point out that the official cause of the Dodge fire is “under investigation” at this point.
Seems there has been a few campfires this week on the forest that were in the rings but still hot and unattended. This one came down as an escaped campfire when a forest representative went at scene.
Yes based on radio traffic. On my other platforms I am very specific when I post to state the source. And I try to use multiple sources so that people have as much information as possible and then it’s up to them to do what they want with that information. Here most people recognize that a lot of IA information comes from radio traffic so I haven’t been specifically stating that.
I do, however put the link to sources other than radio traffic. In this case a FB post.
Feels kinda weird that the Fire Protection District is making a statement on the cause of a @Stanislaus_NF fire.
Pinecrest, CA – The acreage did not grow overnight in the Dodge Fire burning southeast of Pinecrest Lake in the Stanislaus National Forest, and one local fire unit that assisted in battling the blaze reports an escaped campfire as the cause.
The fire broke out on Thursday afternoon in the area of Crabtree and Dodge Ridge roads, and another six spot fires were sparked inside the fires within the initial fire, as reported here. This morning, the fire remains at an estimated 1.8 acres and all containment lines are holding, according to forest spokesperson Ben Cossel. He tells Clarke Broadcasting this morning that there is still smoke in the interior and resources have mopped up 15 feet within the fire’s footprint. He added, “All resources are off the line and are returning to quarters. E333, Crew1, WT242, E314, and Crew81 will be returning tomorrow [Sunday] at 6 a.m.”
When the fire first ignited, Clarke Broadcasting detailed that there were reports that the fire was the result of an escaped campfire. One of the local crews called to assist in battling the fire was from the Mi-Wuk Sugar Pine Fire Protection District. In a social media post, the district stated, “It [Dodge Fire] consisted of a group of small fires that originated from an escaped campfire. Please remember to be fire smart when camping. Fuels are very dry and receptive this time of year.”
Cossel did not confirm that as the ignition and noted the fire’s cause remains under investigation.

Dodge Fire Acreage Holds Overnight mymotherlode.com/news/local/272…
Kinda like when the usfs gave an official document with the listed cause of the creek fire as lightning to calfire but for months continued telling us they didn’t know yet then saying it was most likely lightning.
The Mi-Wuk Sugar Pine Fire Protection District publicly stated on Friday that an escaped campfire started the blaze, but the U.S. Forest Service says it’s still looking into the cause.
The agency that has investigative authority should be the only agency commenting on the investigation.
