Still have the 3 post only issue.
Are there two cabins in the area, the Snow Creek Ranger Cabin which was shut down in the 1980’s and then there is the Snow Creek Flat Cabin for the snow survey’s and skier’s in the winter time?
I’ve been asking around. I have a lot of connections to the park… Worked there for a few years and the ex husband worked there for a very long time… One cabin… Looks like it’s @ 1 mile from the fire at this time uphill from it according to a friend.
Thanks for the heads up. I know that area like the back of my hand, was up there three weeks ago. There’s only one cabin now, that is correct, which is typically used by skiers in the winter. It’s been closed for a couple years due to Covid and lack of winter.
This location is due north of Half Dome, separated by the granite cliffs of Tenaya Canyon which should act as a firebreak. Yosemite Valley is 2400 feet below and 2 miles to the SW. Tioga Road is two miles and change north.
Typically NPS will allow smaller fires to burn or smolder but they’ll be protecting the SW direction of spread. The vegetation in other directions isn’t terribly dense and is broken up by other patches of granite. They’ll probably aim to protect the cabin. It’s not a vital resource, more historic, but it it burns, it will not be rebuilt.
Without speculating on the start, the area marked Footbridge is a popular campsite, the first spot where camping is allowed for those hiking up the Snow Creek Trail from the Valley. More scenic campsites are slightly to the south but camping is no longer allowed because a mama bear figured out how to open the plastic bear canisters in which hikers store their food. She’d chuck them down the cliff and wait until they pop. Then she taught her cubs.
The park service believes it was human caused and does seem to be suppressing it as they have helos and engines assigned.
That’s good. Hopefully just a little spot fire they’ll put down quick.
There’s a couple of short videos in this post in the comments
Most recent update I’ve found is that it’s lined and 19 acres. As of this morning
I figured they’d be able to hold it at the 19 acres
