VNC had on their cad a few days ago that they sent an OES wt to a fire east of Bend Or. It’s no longer showing, but that doesn’t mean it came back.

Oh this discussion, why doesn’t OES send more Local Government overhead out of state? I’ve seen it but very very rarely.

Depends on the requests and agreements between the two involved states. California tends to order big in these EMAC situations, but we have no idea what Oregon has ordered.

A lot of the lightning bust fires are in very remote areas, with a lot of recent fire history. Many of the new fires in the rangelands (between Bend and Columbia River) are already out. The ones on farther east are more into the timber. We should have a better idea of what the extent of their problem looks like in next day or two. Weather doesn’t look particularly helpful for next few days.
Unrelated, but the pro version of CalTopo now lets you use live GOES 1km satellite views, including heat signatures, as a base layer!

Local government equipment = $$$$$.
If you follow out of state fires, they do not begin to send the amount of personnel or equipment to their fires.

From what I understand, if other states request resources, OES gives them a cost “quote” and the requesting state makes a decision. I think this is why we see more out of state resources, during peak fire season in Ca than what we send out. But I’m no SME.

The suppression expenditures for California / Forest Service Region 5 are much higher than any other region in the country. There ends up being a lot of beef about that, on just about every front. On the contracting side, there has long been a perception in the Pacific Northwest that California/Region 5 resources and Contractors are overpriced. When I was running GIS trailers in the mid-2000s, we stopped getting calls for fires in Region 6 until we signed up and staged equipment within the region (even though it was actually priced the same as our Region 5 equipment).
2023 was a slow year - the 2021 Dixie Fire alone cost well over $600M to fight…

The email I saw said (5) task forces from OES would be heading north along with a small spattering of overhead. OES Region III was not going to send resources due to increased fire activity in the region and fewer OES resources available.
The P2P costs have always been an issue, understandably. I remember sending our OES Type 1 to ID or UT 15 years ago +/- only to be turned around at the Truckee Ag Inspection station once costs were actually found out. (Allegedly)
