Not even close enough. We need way more change. I am in a tract in Murrieta, I’m not down wind of any vegetation for a santa ana, far enough away from a daily coastal influence fire issue (tested on the Tenaja Fire 2019) yet my insurance wildfire risk is based on my Zipcode…this is ridiculous. AAA in a letter told me that there is nothing i can do to reduce my risk/rate as its solely based on my zipcode.
Go ahead and drop in 92562 in google
Earth and look at the diversity in risk. Anywhere from the border of the cleveland national forest with decadent brush to tract homes not even close to a threat yet all treated the same. So bad.

I hear you, 25 years with the same insurance company( The good Hands Folks) dropped my like a Hot Potato. Not one claim in 25 years.

Two Fire Stations 3 minutes from my house, Cal Fire Twain Harte and Twain Harte District. Both staffed 24/7 365 a year. A green top hydrant 200FT away. AA, two AT and a Helo about 5 out when off the runway during Fire Season. Didn’t matter and great clearance around the house. Burned my property with a drip torch every Spring.

The Fire Hazard Severity program established by the State was a good program with good intentions but bad implementation. Not enough time and energy was placed in the detail. When I was a chief officer i changed several areas in my area of responsibility and I must say that it took some time and energy to accomplish. There is a way and it takes the focus of the local fire authorities. If this is the metric they are using it can be adjusted.

My letter from AAA says my risk is determined by zipcode. Says nothing about cal fire data.

The fire hazard severity maps gave the insurance industry a pathway to adjust their rates and policies by using a government provided source to adjust their rates and coverage areas
Now much of SRA areas are virtually un-insurable unless you have Fair Plan.
Un-intended consequences

AJ that is just criminal. Classification by zip code is a way to grab money or absolve them of writing any new policies. The FHSZ s are much much more granular than zip codes.

AJ, Firedog1, and others with specific expertise and local knowledge…go to your county, state politicians. That is what they are there for.
Get them or their staffs to go to the state insurance commissioner. That is where effective pushback on the schemes to rack in $$$$ can happen.
Also US Congressman John Garamendi (CA Dist 8 Solano and CoCo Counties) used to be the Cal Insurance Commissioner. He helped solve the insurance crisis that happened 15 or so years ago. I know he still cares about the problem.

You guys have the knowledge and the Cred the Pols will want your help. Their constituents are angry.

Oh i have a whole rant on Linkedin lol calling out the commissioner but yeah I need to go to my local representative and show them how my insurance company is choosing to rate me.

Just go straight to the Insurance Commissioner. It is what my sister, who was very high in a major player in CA, told my mom to do when she had a problem. Of course, that was a long time ago, a different era.

many of those structures are outbuildings or detached garages. There will likely not be an individual claim for each structure.
