Dark Theme Unusable

The following happened today on my laptop and cell phone using chrome, edge and duckduckgo. I’ve always had the dark theme selected. When opening up in any browser all icons are “unfetchable” and display what I think is an error pictogram. The webpage display has the dark theme and all text is also in a dark/black display just slightly off of the background color such that it is practically impossible to use the site. If I delete all cookies the background return to white, but as soon as I sign on it flips to black and is unreadable.

I can just make out the webpage and it appears the HTML display is all f’d up. The only way for me to rectify it was create another account (which defaults to the light them) and from there I could tell where the mouse needed to be to make my way to the location to deselect dark them on my signed in original account. (I used the edge browser for the new account and chrome for my real account).

Anyone else having issues with the dark theme? And to any moderator, I’ve created a bogus account if you want to delete it.

Additionally, my “avatar” errors out now to the broken link display.

My work desktop PC has this problem. All browsers, regardless of extensions, adblock/script isolation, incognito, etc. I am in dark mode too. Text is white, icons gone, this text box is transparent so if website text is behind it, I see both unless I scroll so it’s “blank” behind my typing. The buttons still work, and I have a few memorized because I’m a junky, but yeah, this is painful. I figured the proxy at work is blocking some odd CDN somewhere. Then I get home on my trusty 2015 iMac and login and everything is perfect. Validating to hear someone else has similar issues.

Edit: just checked work laptop - behind same network and security and extensions, works just fine in dark mode. So can’t tell if this is local to a machine, or the website needs more coffee.

Edit 2: on the laptop I switched my interface profile to the alternate “Wildfire Intel Theme” (and had to grab my sunglasses) and set it to make default on all my devices. Went back to desktop PC and I see it all now in its blinding glory. :bright_button:

And @tumbleweed your particular avatar on my desktop is broken still in light mode, on the laptop it works.

I thought I would test it on my desktop. I switched to Dark theme, saved changes, and bam!!.. That was a mistake. I was finally able to navigate through blindly clicking where options used to be, and was finally – after 10 minutes or so – to recover back to the normal theme.

I would strongly recommend removing that option until some of the undesirable issues are worked out.

and though it doesn’t work in Dark Mode, the burning bush @tumbleweed burns brightly in regular mode.

“Wow,” I thought, “who knew that Discourse offered a Dark Mode! I should try it!”

Narrator: He should not have tried it

I was using Safari on an iPhone 14 Pro Max when I foolishly enabled the setting. For the love of gravy, don’t enable it if you want to keep using the site.

Completely and totally useless setting, at least on this dude’s phone. Logged in through Chrome and Edge on the iPhone…. No dice.

Logged in on Chrome on a MacBook, and also struck out. After banging my head on the desk long enough to have a lovely assortment of splinters in my forehead, I hit upon the solution:

Brightness all the way up, lights all the way down. Found enough contrast between the black text and the background to navigate around to reset the setting.

Of course, the cruel irony is that those that need to know this information can only find it if they happen to come to the site WITHOUT LOGGING IN and coming to the Help subforum.

So, uh, tell your friends not to enable the setting (at least until whatever bug currently exists is handled)

Lemme know if you need a can o’ Pledge or bottle of Pine-Sol for your own forehead after trying to fix this for yourself… I’ve gotta bit of each left over, and my forehead has never been so smooth!

I have been using dark mode for years on this site, and it just stopped working. On mobile, it was so bad I couldn’t navigate to the settings page to fix it. I would really like my dark mode back.
