I heard that the LAL and Haines will no longer be used because it’s not very accurate or helpful ?
It is currently just a recommendation from NWCG to the NWS.
We’ll have to see where it goes from here.
We use both here in Northern Arizona to justify adding staffing for the shift.
Just wanted to update that our NWS forecasts are now showing “Chance of Thunder” instead of LAL
I just got out of the RX410 class at the AZ Wildfire Academy (refresher since my first class was RX 25 and the last 410 class was in 2004). I posed the question to our NWS instructors why these two components were eliminated. The answere i got was less than stellar. They did say there are other products that are replacing the LAL and Haines, but never went into it. Anyone know what those products are?
Hot, dry windy…https://hdwindex.fs2c.usda.gov/
LAL will be replaced with thunderstorm coverage
Yep, because LAL never had a Zero. Was a 1, meaning None.
Used initially in S-390 as default for 0 in the TI-59 Fire Behavior calculator back in the day.
