In '78, my first captain, CDF, told me there were going to be these massive fires in my career. He could see it coming. In his 35+ years, he only had a handful of 20-30k fires. He said between the political drive for saving different endangered species, ruining the logging industry, and the projected massive urban growth into the interface was going to be the driving forces to cause 50k plus fires on a regular basis, I honored his wisdom, but in my youth, I didn’t really think it would be quite the way he predicted. He was spot on!

I’m reposting this here updated, better than in the LA fire chief thread.

According to Google quick search (I make no claim of accuracy)

WTC $36 BBN

Katrina $201
Harvey $160
Ian $120
Maria $115
Sandy $89

Camp fire $13BBN

Moody’s now saying LA losses/economic impact $20-30B, Bloomberg $52-57, we’ll see as more info comes in.

If you, as yet, have not had your career fire, you will have it. Best be prepared to handle the career fire. Always prepare to be your best, always on your best when the career fire day occurs. Our firefighters and the public always DESERVE (D) and EXPECT (E) our very best. The career fire day will be damn tough. You will be tested to your maximum. Read Teddy Roosevelt’s Arena Talk. Says it all. Best wishes. Thank you.

Palisades has officially passed Tubbs in the most structures destroyed category. I doubt either will top the Camp fire, but now LA has the #2 and #3 spots on the list sewed up.
