From downtown Truckee…
Why no MAFFs? Two of the high rollers C-130s are sitting on the ramp at Reno.
The other Davis thread says only one MAFFS at Reno. Perhaps the other isn’t staffed. What is the policy and protocol for using MAFFs in Nevada. Remember, it’s not just someone saying “there is one sitting there”.
MAFFS was deactivated at the end of August. None of the Nevada ANG aircraft are currently configured or staffed for firefighting.
It’s up to the Feds to request assistance from the DoD to initiate an activation.
May be talking old times, but I think the Governor of the State that hosts the MAFFS unit(s) can order activation and deployment within that state? If I recall correctly, Governor of CA has ordered MAFFS for State missions?
Correct. State activation vs. federal activation
True, however, the state has to have the budget to support such an activation and an arrangement with the USFS allowing for state use of the federally owned MAFFS equipment. California has that in place, Nevada does not.
Bottom line is, the governor can unilaterally active the planes and people, but not the fire fighting equipment.
