Weather set up for this is almost worse case in terms of winds, rh, and afternoon instability. Potential is off the charts this afternoon… Red Flag Warnings in place.

500 acres, and red flag warning today over the fire area for gusty winds.

Looks like two large tankers, two SEATs are assigned with lead plane and air attack. Reloading at Stead. Two (?) helicopters have pulled up too.

From watch duty;

Fire is estimated at about 500 acres at this time. Conditions are very smoky in Verdi near Stateline. There are about 200 personnel on the fire from federal, state and local fire agencies.

Focus is on progress we have made as winds pick up this afternoon. 400 homes are threatened. Goal is to hold fire south of Interstate 80, north of Garson Road. Type 3 IMT ordered.

I had a look at the fire from Somersett at about 2030 last night. My impression then was that their was very little if any open line. That is that forward spread had been stopped. Almost all of the perimeter appeared to be in grass. There was quite a bit of material burning in the areas of heavy fuels in the interior.

The places that I could not really see were the steep slopes going down from I-80 down toward the river on the west end of the fire. That is the windward edge of the fire. From the Peavine camera that is the place that almost all of the smoke is coming from. There are engines on the freeway at that location. There would be heavy mop-up there, dead and down from previous fires.

No question that the wind this afternoon will challenge the state of the fire but since the perimeter seems to be in grass and in relatively flat land (not up the north-facing slope of the Carson Range), I am optimistic.

I stand corrected. A friend sent some video from about 1000 this morning. There is was some fire going up the steep hill of the Carson Range right behind the Quillici Ranch House. If you are familiar this the western edge of the last Quillici Fire. The video showed a very nice drop by one of the SEATs assigned to Stead. Also videos of copters getting after that same piece of open line.

And now another video of the BAE 146 dropping on that same line.
