Thanks for the intel!
Truckee Meadows Fire is reporting the fire at 1,800 acres and at least 12 structures have been lost. 60 apparatus on scene with more responding. The Nevada National Guard (army?) has been activated and will be at the fire Sunday morning. National Giard personnel will start with hand crew work (paired with Rose Creek crew out of Winnemucca) and UH-60 blackhawks performing bucket drops.
There is an Army Guard in Nevada, but Nevada Air Guard (152nd Airlift Wing) has more likely been activated. The 152nd Intelligence Wing operated out of Reno during the Cold War, doing high altitude recon.
Today, they mostly fly C-130 Hercules aircraft from the Reno-Tahoe airport (supply missions to Afghanistan during that operation), and a few Blackhawks based at Stead north of Reno. They do get called on from time to time; private contracted flyers operating out of Stead went to the Bear Valley fire last week.
For those not familiar with the Great Basin, the Washoe Zephyr appears in late summer afternoons. The mechanism of the wind action is not fully understood, but it produces strong updrafts. As such, there is a launch near the site extremely popular with sailplane & hang-glider pilots for those very winds. This terrain is really rugged – about 90% of the county’s search & rescue operations were down in this area in the 1960s / 1970s, before development.
Based on the latest map, the fire is luckily below/east of most of the rugged terrain you mention. There is some more dense forest to the west of the fire.
Nevada National Guard asked to assist with Davis Fire response
The Nevada Division of Forestry has asked the Nevada National Guard to assist firefighting efforts for the Davis Fire.
The initial request is for “handcrews and a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter,” [according to the Nevada National Guard].
The National Guard added that aerial firefighting will resume on Sunday morning.
As a spouse of a NV Air Nat’l Guard member, I can tell you with 100% certainty that it was the Army Guard getting activated. Requested the hand crew and the helo. The NV Air Guard does have 2 MAFFS tails, but one is still in South Ops and the other is back home in Reno.
Does anyone have an IAP or ops info from IC?
