Officials give update on firefighters hurt in Wilmington explosion

Prayers to LAFD…

As an aside, what an excellent presentation of a fire dept PIO. Kudos to this Fire Captain.

The push to adopt or transition to alternative fuels in place of fossil fuels is not without risks. This risk, although primarily placed on municipal firefighters, is not exclusive and does not exclude our wildland firefighters. Plug-in electric, hybrid, Hydrogen, and CNG powered vehicles crisscross urban and rural areas. We have experienced a continuous uptick in frequency of incidents involving AF vehicles. All emergency responders –municipal and wildland fire, EMS, and law enforcement–should strongly consider some type of basic familiarization of actions to take if you are first on-scene whether a fire or vehicle accident or other type of incident. I know, many will say they have enough to worry about without adding in another low frequency event on their plate. The problem is that it often can be a high risk/low frequency event, and there are lots of training lessons learned after those occur. Just food for thought.

Tumbleweed, Definitely had many best practices embedded in the interview. The one super rare one I heard was almost always repeating every reporters question prior to answering it. Unless the questioners’ are also mic’d (almost never in this type of setting) you must guess. That is so important but very rarely seen.

More AF vehicle safety issues. The smoke from these fires are Toxic at best.

LFD came out with a quick read (minus the videos) that explained the major differences between LPG and CNG tanks on vehicles, and more importantly, the function of the relief valve. Who’d have thought that cooling the tank may inadvertently be a really bad thing to do. I am also not thrilled by a xx foot long (just watched a CNG safety video and they increased that to 100 feet - but the newest vehicles have their vent pointed up at a 45 degree angle) horizontal flame that looks more like a rocket firing on a test stand than a CNG tank venting like it needs to. You can find these types of vehicles (delivery, refuse, busses, and passenger vehicles) regardless of where your response area–urban or rural. It is an easy add-on to your RT-130.
