Rx today east of Grass Valley with First Rain Land Stewardship in un-thinned Doug fir and live oak. We’ve got two units going, for about 7.5 steep acres.

Nice job Zeke

Any before, during, and after photos?
What aspect is this?

Project details if you can share.

I’ll make a video soon. It was west facing with some variety of aspects. Lots of medium sized live oak, with a few huge old oaks.
Temps were in low 80s, RH got down around 25%, PIG briefly hit 70%.
Very steep, and a challenging shape to the unit due to property lines, we burned both units at once with about 15 people. Hoselay around the whole thing, no vehicle access. The riparian zone RIPPED. Lots of fuel.
Landowner paid out of pocket. No grants, no CEQA required!
It’s not cheap, but the landowners were very happy. They just bought the place and are happy to get it opened up and see what’s there. Neighbors have been burning piles for 47 years but this was their first experience with broadcast burns.

Smoke from Angel Island controlled burn leaves East Bay officials fuming

One step forward…

This issue was addressed in this second video about the Angel Island prescribed burn. I guess East Bay officials didn’t watch the video.

Just posted a video about a burn we did with First Rain Land Stewardship above Nevada City on September 2nd that included about 1.5 acres of untreated cedar thickets. First entry burns are not only essential, but the window of opportunity is much larger than many people might think (e.g. two days out of August, at 3,000’ elevation)!

Cal Fire Butte Unit underburned about 35 acres over past two days above Magalia, near Paradise Lake.
This was a maintenance burn in a 2020 biomass thinning project.
Yesterday’s burn was largely north-facing, with very discontinuous fuels (due in part to soil disturbance during the 2020 logging). It was a pretty challenging unit to fire, due to the mild conditions and lack of surface fuels, but they got it to go with minimal torching of the larger trees.
There are another 10-15 acres to burn, but they hung it up yesterday for the time being, due to AQ concerns.
Here is a sample, longer video coming soon.

TGU had a successful burn yesterday it sounds like on Corning Land and Cattle ranch out west of Corning below MNF. The column turned quite a few heads through the afternoon and sunset.

It appears TGU will try today for the Big Bluff RX burn a bit further north on the Fumasi Ranch off Colyear Springs Rd. 993 acres, with C613 on standby and the old Rhino Copter 906 (490DF) back over familiar terrain with the helitorch.

Thanks MEU for helping cover the county so the locals can get some training in their backyard.

edit: the Maxwell2 MOA will be active all morning from 4-500ft AGL, which is right over this entire project. That’ll make the rotors a little nervous.
