Is it possible to have a spike camp extended past 21 days
very rare…but possible in some remote fires
If it was to be extended past 21 days is it another 7 on top or would it be 30 days
more than likely crews would be rotated at 14 days
Hmmm. I think I am missing something. A Spike Camp is a name for an inanimate location typically used in wildland firefighting in remote areas to reduce travel time and the logistical complexity of supporting resources working in remote locations. I have never heard of restrictions placed on the time one can be used unless the land owner where the spike camp is located has restrictions. Depending on who owns the land, land use agreements for these sites must/should be established to cover the period of time it will be used. The incident business advisor and/or Finance Section Chief should be consulted for that specific information. I really don’t think that is your actual question.
Are you asking about the personnel who are using or assigned to the spike camp? Like how long can someone be assigned to return to a spike camp for rest and food during an incident?
Yes. My fiance was sent to a remote mountain in los angeles for a spike camp and has been gone since October 27th and is still out there with no cell service i was just asking if it was possible to have his time extended past 21 days
So another 7 days on top of the 21 so it would 18 days or would they just have them stay the 30 days
The book answer – known as the Red Book, is incomplete.
“Duration of Assignments
A deployment should last no longer than 14 days (excluding travel).”
Under certain conditions, the length of assignment can be extended past the 14 to a total of 21. Very rarely (like FEMA assignments or assignments to Alaska) would it be agreed to as a 30 day assignment. I do not think that applies here
However, there are lots of variables. Agencies have their own guidance, like local government will follow their departments guidelines and may internally switch out personnel more often. CalFire has their own regulations, and those guidelines can be different for IMT members versus on the ground (or air) resources. Federal personnel have interpretations based on employing agency. These are just a few of them.
Without knowing the very specific information I would default to say that 21 “should” be the maximum and you should hear from those assigned to the spike camp fairly soon because the 21 usually includes travel. Other folks on this site may have the latest for those assigned in the SoCal area.
My fiance left for a spike camp on October 27th and he’s in los angeles in a remote location. It’s now day 24 that’s why I’m asking
