Terminology

Deleted the similar post so its cleaner just know :backhand_index_pointing_up: post is in response to mine here. Thanks busy mods for cleaning up my mess :grimacing:.

So over the past few weeks I’ve heard alot of “she’s gone” talk followed somewhat promptly by quite a bit of “stick a fork” type jargon with the occasional “they’re going to hammer it”.

My point if any is lets all calm down on the predictions, and possibly focus on the factual progress that is currently taking place. Example “they are painting the left flank towards x ridge” or even “sounds like they are planning on painting the left flank towards x ridge”.

Ive noticed alot of high fiving and over excitement when retardant or dozer lines get in place or are in the process however it’s either in its first burn period or not direct line in all areas or hasn’t been secured by ground troops.

Also it appears to be setting troops up for the perception of failure when people reading things of this nature dont see the fire go out and they believed the internet had the right prediction but the fireman on the line could not execute properly.

Please remember that this site is viewed by all types of people and I’m not just talking about public who dont have experience but young fireman who dont truly know how to interpret everything they are reading, they will start to emulate the behavior and responses they see here more than likely with poor timing and improper situation application.

When this happens we will start to see much more uptick in social media style responses on this platform of people chasing hearts like thumbs ups, there will be more frequent posts that dont add substance to the discussion and dilute threads.

Im not trying to say dont make predictions, or dont post a screen grab of an impressive column development, or even tell a story that is relatively connected to a current incident from history.

I am saying lets try and be more tactful with our verbiage, lets be mindful of the frequency of our posts. Lets try and refrain from saying how effective something will be before its implemented (unless its in a thread appropriate for discussion), and lets not get sucked in to wanting to be the one who predicted the stop or major run unless its related to an attempt to provide information relevant to aiding the boots on the ground.

We’re all guilty of over excitement once in awhile however, I feel this trending in a direction that is making this into “the norm” and not the exception.

I will post this in the terminology thread however I thought since this is the most active incident and I believe it relates I would include it here as well.

Please remember this is not an attack and please add substance to this if you believe you can maybe do so in the terminology thread though.
