This may have something to do with the dismal season we’ve had so far. Everyone is on pins and needles for something big to happen, some with excitement and some with worry. I am guilty of this myself. Edit, I thought I was on the terminology thread. Please move
told a story the other day to a friend about how i rescued my buddy when one decided to make a home inside of his ear on a small incident many years ago. a bottle of cold water right into the ear did the trick and evicted the little [stump] f**ker
It’s hard to illustrate having a problem with something while not having a problem with it, and it will always ruffle feathers.
I tried to convey that to me it’s not the terms, rather its the frequency they get used and the motivation behind them, this I believe dilutes the meaning of them and also encourages the younger FFs as you point out to use them sometimes untimely. I 100% agree it is opportunity to mentor and I am all for it, what I can’t agree with is the departure from an old culture, not to say there isn’t room for development and change however, things are swinging to far to fast in my opinion away from tradition.
When I came up there seemed to be a much more clear distinction between when a FF should speak up and when he should get to work, now trust me if the overhead is not making a good call or doing something dangerous I’m all for the guy who sees the problem no matter the rank to challenge the status quo.
I simply see the motivation for wanting to be heard has more to do with wanting recognition on here than the “hunger” to get after it.
Technology advancement is great but I’ve seen a tendency for it to be damaging to people’s overall judgement about fireline (walking the dirt vs reading the IAP & tablet map). Perhaps that belongs jn a separate discussion
.
There’s plenty more I could say here but just trying to perhaps clean up some of the post above, I think I have no problem with the development of the site so long as the original intent is still the feature and not a side product.
I’m taking this in as a good reminder for me - i need reminders from time to time, especially when hopped up on sweet tea!
And in full transparency i’d pay $ to see your tip applied to the various Weather threads also bcuz imo it is needed - especially when rando’s (of which i consider myself one) chime in with “randocasting” on the heels of the well established imet’s & meteorologist that have been informing us/this site for years.. \m/
Makes sense and I agree.
I think we are saying the same thing with different words big dog lol
Are you my Captain dad?
Sheesh guys! Why all the bickering!? This type of thing is why I’m using the site and posting less. We all have different ideas on some things, so be it. Let it ride… No need to throw knives.
Thank you!!!
Apologies for the immature response to those on here that add value. Moving on…..
One of the issues we face on this site is unless you know who’s posting on the other side of the name behind the username you don’t know the background, experience, authenticity, etc.. of person posting. Today’s young firefighter’s don’t know, or in some cases don’t respect, who is a retiree that may have valueable history, information, background, etc. or vice-versa. So, it’s difficult to know who the audience is or the actual names behind the posts. Some are well known people, and some are people that don’t necessarily want to be known. A smorgasbord if you will! But, times do change as well. It’s just a matter of trying to appeal across the board to the entire audience on here. The other problem is how to receive the information or posts. It’s easy to mis-understand the message just like texts, emails, etc.. and some are easy to pounce before sitting back and thinking about what is said or relayed. Context is everything and patience is a must.
Watchout #19. When bickering and finger pointing reach a crescendo on the hotlist expect a rapid increase in large fires over the coming days and weeks, especially if said activity occurs in late August ahead of incoming lightning and holiday weekend. (please note this is meant to be humorous)
thank you for this lol
True that lol
So maybe don’t “heart” or “like” the obvious attention-seekers. I’ve got a couple of them on “Ignore” to cut some of the clutter.
As layman non fire type the jargon/slang is interesting and sometimes funny but sometimes it’s pointless. She gone is overused because of a fire social media influencer who has a podcast. I’ve seen that posted and looked at a camera looking at said fire and only seeing a wisp of smoke. In grifford thread someone it looked like the firing was going sideways when it wasn’t and was actually going very good. Also don’t forget there are people here who may be pretending to be something they aren’t.
If you’re at a fire and posting about it say you’re there. If you’re on here telling someone who’s at a fire posting here to get to work and you’re serious come on, stop acting like you never had downtime even while on the clock.
A lot of people are peed off because they aren’t racking up the overtime but to put it bluntly I’m glad because that means my families cabin and a bunch of peoples homes are not threatened by fire. Its a long, hot, a potentially active weekend so that could all change in a few hours.
And, people are actually spending time with family doing the things they normally miss out on, and years later realize it’s to late! Today, I look back and realize I missed a lot in my 4 kids lives. Of course, like many of us, the 1st marriage failed, and some had more marriages that failed. If anything, take it from an old timer, cherish and nourish those loved ones close in your lives. Give them the time now when it’s slow, and build up that bank so when the hard times come due to a rough season, being held on, or on a fire or covering a station for 30+ days there is more grace that comes from those loved one’s. Just say’in! Always take advantage when you can! That’s my two cents. A lot of times, slow is good for a whole lot of reasons. Food for thought!
I just wanted to clear up some terminology usage and remind everyone to take the opportunity to educate, not over post gotcha terms, and recognize we can all do better.
My bad everyone.
Another for the food themed terminology:
“Chainsaw Steaks” = Potentially random cut of beef & gristle made to look like a steak!
Keep in mind, if you say, “I’m on the incident”, or “talking to Branch”, etc, if what you’re saying contradicts what’s in the 209 or PIO official news, it can cause unnecessary phone calls and it’s against policy to go outside the regular info release outlets.
I realize its impossible to censor everything, but if we are maintaining this website as an authority on fire info, folks probably shouldn’t qualify their opinion on here with things like the quotes above if it’s not aligned with PIO info. My 2 cents and former 209 smithee.
Example: If it’s in the official information flow, “Crews are having difficulty due to… and we need more stuff to protect xyz.” And somebody here posts, “I’m out here right now and everything looks good. They should be kicking us out soon.”
Happy August monsoons!
