Type 2 teams converting to type 1?

Quarter, Vegetation Fire, Tuolumne County, Update
Italian Bar Rd. x Grant Ridge Rd., Twain Harte
Federal DPA, FRA, Stanislaus National Forest

  • 15 acres (+0 acres), brush and timber, 0% contained (+0% containment)
  • Slow rate of spread
  • CA IMT1 Team 5 (Young) and CA IMT2 Team 10 (Dalrymple) have been activated.
  • Fire in remote location with difficult access
  • Evacuation warnings in place for the community of Cedar Ridge
  • Multiple structures threatened

Is team 10 starting their conversion from a type 2 to a type 1 team?

They started last year, and the journey continues.

So why not follow the rotation? It should have been team 13.

The type 2 teams are paired with type 1 teams, CWCG set the pairing

Each Type 2 team is paired up with a Type 1 team and has been since last year. When a Type 1 team gets activated, the partner Type 2 team goes with them but as a short team. So mostly the C&G from the Type 2.

Do anyone else think that California Forest will just order type 2 teams from out of state instead of ordering a type 1 team? Or will the Forest insist on ordering the type 1 team as a short team as a type 2 substitute? Does anyone think more Local type 3 teams will get requested? Just some thoughts.

I think for the most part the typing of the fire will still dictate whether or not a type 1 or type 2 team goes. Not 100% sure why the quarter fire requested a type 1 but I know they just got cancelled and are heading to pre-position at McClellan. Wondering if that was part of the plan all along to get them mobilized, use them if the fire blew up…and if not, preposition them with this weeks weather and with the southwest being as active as it is.

Don’t all the C&G on the T2 teams have to complete S-520 before they’re considered T1?

Not sure exactly. This is all a part of getting more type 1 IC’s out there and eventually making every team a type 1 on the Fed side.

I think most have. Now they just need to sign off task books I believe.

It has less to do with taking 520, than with getting task books completed.

Type 1 Team for 15 ac?

The Task Book for all the C&G positions is the same for T1 and T2. Wouldn’t they already have it completed if they were assigned to a T2 IMT?

The taskbook has to be repeated on a Type 1 incident.

It’s pretty obvious to me why the CA IMT’s are full of retirees. It takes someone their entire career to get enough trainee assignments for tasks they’ve already completed. And also the fact that the qualified person (most likely a retired employee) that is evaluating the trainee could be displaced from their IMT position if someone ever got qualified as T1 who is a current active employee.
