Watch Duty Org Looking for Scanner Help in WA, OR, CO

Watch Duty is looking for more volunteer radio scanners to help report in Washington, Northern & Eastern Oregon, as well as Colorado. We currently have 70+ reporters who collaborate around the clock to bring residents up to the minute information as wildfires unfold in real-time. If you’re curious how we collaborate, check this YouTube video of us working the Fairview Fire in September of 2022: Watch Duty | Behind the Scenes of the Deadly Fairview Fire - YouTube

In addition to being a part of our fire family you will get access to all of our bots and other technologies that help monitor and detect new ignitions throughout the American West. We have built everything from automated tone-out detections (Watch Duty | Wildfire Dispatch Tone Detection - YouTube), firefighting aircraft monitoring, and much more. We have even gone so far as deploying our custom built Broadcastify repeaters deep in the dead zones so we never miss a transmission (New Watch Duty Scanners - Watch Duty).

If you’d like to join or learn more, please fill out this short questionnaire at watchduty.org/volunteer.

Two years ago I received an alert on Watch Duty for a firefighter injury here in Northern California. Something one of your “scanners” heard over the radio. Completely inappropriate! I reported it and stated that those sort of things should not be reported on your app pending official announcement from the responsible agency. Never heard a thing back.

Have you addressed this issue?

Thank you for your concern.

The incident you are referring to was the Roblar Fire on June 27th 2022 in West Sonoma County.

The death in question was a civilian on a skid steer who took it upon himself to try and stop the spread. Unfortunately he lost his life and we regret reporting this to the public. We immediately put out a retraction on both Watch Duty (Watch Duty) as well as on our social platforms (Watch Duty - One of the reports on the Roblar Fire... | Facebook).

You can read more about our code of conduct here: Watch Duty Code of Conduct.
