I was sent there from Redwood National Park (Law Enforcement Ranger with a red card). Got to see how a big fire reacted to 80 plus mph winds.
There was some sort of discussion about how, since this National Park fire was sucking up so many resources from all over the west, they should have more National Park resources assigned, so they put together a couple crews from western parks and sent them over.
I also recall seeing some CDF rigs out there, and at first thought nothing of it until I remembered we were a long ways from California!

We were the first team on the North Fork fire which started outside the park on the Targhee. It was around 500 ac. when we arrived from CA in late July, by the time it was over in early Nov. it was well over 400k . The next day it ran 5k through the lodgepole headed towards Old Faithful. We packed everything up at Island Park and move there. John Hawkins was one of our OPS and he brought Ed Waggoner up shorty there after as a structure specialist.

Yep. Brought in both Ed Waggoner and Bill Holmes. Jim Klump was my OSC1 partner. Was a very interesting assignment.

Black and yellow plate on the rig. Last issued in 1969 for the general public, but the rig seems newer than that? Maybe E-plates went on longer.

I think that is a blue and yellow plate, it looks darker because it is in a bit of shadow.

Old-school documentary—like something you would watch in school on a reel-to-reel while your science teacher graded tests or slipped out back for a cigarette break.
