The NWS Calistoga forecast for the next 36 hours doesn’t look promising.
To sum it up, the ATGS (air tactics group supervisor) is an expert in multi-tasking - has no less than 5 radio channels to listen to, watch the sky and the ground, coordinate all different kinds of fixed and rotor wing in a tight air space, and figure out where to put the “mud” - kind of like a duck on water - cool and calm on the surface, paddling crazy like below the surface.
For those following along that arent in the fire service this is a really informative.video on what the ATGS does.
Been there done that! In 2016 on the BDF-Blue Cut we had nine airtankers, five copters, Ground Operations, GACG-South Ops, and Tanker base on six channels + intercom in AA.
Thank you so much for the video! That makes everything make more sense. Ironically, the guy who I keep hearing today on Air Tac sounds very much like the same guy in the video. Sounds like they have a ton of traffic up there today, but given the new fires popping up, I’m hoping they get this resolved sooner than later.
Thank you it was vary helpful. We got in at sent right out. It was a long two days. We ended up in Windsor and Shiloh Hills. We saw a lot of action.
Just curious . . . You’re lecturing this person for answering a question someone posed on a Q&A board. Yet on the Q&A link for the Maria Fire you’re looking for video clips of dozer operations. Was wondering how you consider your request to be appropriate or mission critical, versus this person’s question.
His question was asking for the video link of dozer transports driving through a flaming front on the Maria fire, the question in this thread was what does xyz or whatever strike team designator mean. It wasn’t related to anything going on with the kincade fire.
As you are new to the forum combined with making it clear why there are differences between the two, I am going to post the PM, I sent you last night on this discussion. It is not meant to impound you or your question but because I always desire clarity in both this forum and where it becomes critically important, which is on the line.
“So, a couple of things:
1.) What you don’t see are about 6 posts that the Mods deemed as off-topic from the discussion pertaining to ST configurations and make-up that were deleted, not because of my statement but because the Mods also felt they were not pertinent to the discussion and questions of the Kincade Fire.
2.) The Questions and Discussion section is absolutely the place to discuss the matters of the incident, as is what I stated in the post. The section that pertains to mission critical elements the Initial Attacks section which gets moved to Continuing Incidents, normally after the initial burning period of the fire is passed.
3.) The post that I wrote responding to was developing into it’s own topic that had nothing to do with the Kincade Fire along with the fact that the Kincade Fire was at that point becoming a major life safety event that needed to remain on topic.
4.) The question I posed was A.) on-topic pertaining directly to the incident at hand; B.) was not during any major fire activity or C:) impacting significant on-topic information with off-topic information.
If you have a concern with what I post, please feel free to PM me or a Mod for their input or deletion if they feel it is off-topic or if you feel that strongly about it, flag it which gets more immediate review.”
As a side note to this, I would encourage you and any new members to review the forum guidelines and understand why there are two very distinct threads pertaining to incidents. Whenever, there are significant situations occurring on an incident, deviations into side topics becomes problematic towards getting the right information conveyed along with not giving the side topic it’s deserved merit.
Please enjoy the forum and I look forward to seeing positive contributions and perspectives from you in the future.
Meanwhile, firefighters continue to put the Kincade to bed while they are away from their families. Yet, people on this site are not acting their age and bantering about irrelevant topics; all while several people from this fire lost their homes. Please, let’s keep this site civil and on topic!
