Dolan Fire – September 8, 2020, 12:00pm
This is an evolving situation, and we want to share as much information as possible right now. While we work to get your questions answered as quickly as possible, here is what we can confirm right now: A shelter deployment involving fifteen firefighters from the Dolan Fire occurred approximately at 0831 on Tuesday, Sept 8, 2020, in the vicinity of Nacimiento Station. These dedicated firefighters received injuries including burns and smoke inhalation while defending the Nacimiento Station on Dolan Fire on the Los Padres National Forest in California. Nacimiento Station was destroyed. I can confirm that one injury is critical and one serious. Medical care is on scene and both patients are being transported to Community Regional Hospital in Fresno by Life Flight for assessment and care. Mandatory Evacuations are in place for OES Monterrey zone 24. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured firefighters, their family, friends and co-workers. We have procedures in place for emergencies such as this and are being assisted by local officials as part of that plan. We will have additional information available as we are able to confirm it.
MOD NOTE: It has been a very busy day so far. In regards to this IWI, we greatly appreciate those who waited until there was an official release of information about this event. We know and understand that everyone wants to wish these brothers and sisters the very best. It is always a difficult time for everyone and we know your hearts are in the right place.
For those who did post about this earlier, we do hope you will understand why your posts were deleted until there was official confirmation about the IWI event.
Most of the structures in Memorial Park were successfully defended last night, with only some outbuildings destroyed. The “aggressive firing operation” there paid off.
They are also deploying a repeater boat, to sit offshore, to help remedy the horrible comms along the coastal portion. Brilliant idea, as I spent the first 8 days on this fire and it was a struggle the entire time.
I would say firing for sure off Hunter Ligget, no doubt across west to Mckern truck trail to coast ridge road. I used the same lines in mutiple incidents on the Monterey District.
And then next Tue. a Type 2 from Michigan is coming in. A little flare up today in the Limekiln area.
Late this morning a lookout crew notified our Operations Section of a smoke plume rising from Limekiln State Park. An initial attack hot shot crew from Vandenberg Air Force Base immediately responded and confirmed a fire on a ridge deep in Limekiln State Park. Helicopter operations were initiated using a K-Max Helicopter with a Bambi bucket and the fire was knocked down within 2-3 hours. The fire remained within containment lines. Crews will continue to monitor the area. We are currently under a Red Flag warning until tomorrow morning at 11AM. The Monterrey Ranger District of the Los Padres National Forest remains closed until further notice. This encompasses the entire footprint of the Dolan Fire which can be viewed on our Public Information Maps posted daily.
The very warm temperatures will continue today with temperatures in the mid 90’s inland and in the valleys. High temperatures will remain near 90 degrees inland, and in the 70’s along the coast as we move into next week.
Due to the weather conditions, a previously known hot spot ignited yesterday along an unburned island east of Limekiln State Park. The fire ran upslope but burned into blackened areas previously burned during this incident. Fire was monitored by fire crews, and helicopter operations were in progress through the afternoon to protect the drainage areas and extinguish remaining fire.
