CA-LPF-Mill??

Yeah husband (Div 1 of MRD-LPF) was supposed to take on MDF but is on Mike Strawn’s Type II team as Op’s Trainee but they got cancelled to MDF. He will take IC of Hill Fire tonight. If Strawn’s team is activated he will go. I think they are holding out tactically to push button on Mill because they can catch it. Fuel moistures are still at 90% live which means they are holding a little before they catch. This means short range spotting even on the ridge tops. We are coming off of a above average year of rainfall and we have a recent fire burn from Chalk 2008. No big fire weather red flags. This isn’t a early season drought year. Our main concern is dead and down and resource availability in really really steep ass terrain (let us not forget the highest elevation gain in lower 48). I fought these fires. I know what they are looking at. Tough obstacles but the climate is not our big concern right now.

Two people asked me questions in the Hotlist Mill thread which I will answer here. One: No team has been ordered and the forest is allowing the district to manage with from local cooperators. Two: There are no OP’s maps being uploaded to the server yet. I will see if I can get my hands on one from my sources.

I don’t see this fire on the Sit Report or on InciWeb. One would think this fire should be getting some attention on both.

Spot fires outside the heat signatures?

Is there not going to be a team assigned?

Any tankers up in air yet? I’m not hearing or seeing anything. Surprised!

As you probably know, there is a lot of factors when determining the need for tankers. Airspace congestion, actual need on the ground, and visibility to name a few. There are 5 rotor wing over the incident right now along with Air Attack of course, that’s a lot for a 300 acre fire.

Considering the remoteness, the history of fire in that area, the potential, and the issues from yesterday, I’m very surprised a large resource order wasn’t placed last night as opposed to this morning. I hope they catch this today or we might still be talking about it in a month! Good luck to all!

I have a very strong feeling, that by around 2 o’clock this afternoon, we’ll see a big order and probably a team assigned. The weather forecast for Saturday onward is very unfavorable and they want to plan accordingly.

I agree. The history up there is unforgiving.

Sounds like a team is being ordered now.

Thanks. What’s your source?

A very reliable one. Not sure which one it is though.

As of 11:38 am LPNF posted this: “#MillFire has burned approximately 300 acres. Overnight it chewed through the retardant line. More than 300 firefighters on scene. @LosPadresNF will be ordering a team to assist with suppression.“

Yes, Type 2 team ordered.
