CA-YNP-Red & Rodgers & Sept Lightning???

#RedFire @YosemiteNPS is now 749 acres and firefighters are still working it to contain and confine it with natural barriers. Firefighters have been removing fuels from the trails nearby to keep them from being impacted. Beside the yos firefighting module a Mammoth module has been assigned to help as well. Helicopter 551 is assisting with transport of items and personnel in and out.

#RodgersFire is 150 acres now

Edit added 8.23 due to the 3 reply rule

Totaling at 760 acres this afternoon, the #RedFire grew more north and west from its initial perimeter and became more active on the western side. Using granite outcrops along the eastern boundary, firefighters work to confine the fire west of Clark Range.

The #RodgersFire grew to 230 acres with the most active area being the northeast. A small portion of the southern perimeter is still active. Firefighters are actively trying to contain the fire north of the granite shelf above Tuolumne River and west of Rodgers Canyon.

Expect more visible smoke as the fires continue through dense vegetation, rising anywhere from 1,200-1,500 feet.

On August 4th, a lightning strike ignited the #RedFire which has since progressed to the 760-acre fire we are actively managing today. This progression map shows the daily growth from 8/10-8/22. From the point of origin, the fire began to grow more east, while then progressing north.

The August 8th lightning strike that ignited the #RodgersFire has reached 230 acres as of Monday night. The fires growth continues to expand in all directions, with the most active portion of the fire being in the northeast. The map shows its progression from 8/10 - 8/21.

Both fires general behavior has been low intensity and burning in a mosaic pattern across the ground level, with occasional single tree torching due to the conditions of the tree itself. When the dead trees burn, it makes room for new growth and a healthier forest overall. As both of these fires continue into thicker vegetation, expect smoke to be much more visible.

This is setting up just like the Reading Fire in Lassen Park. August isn’t the time to manage fires.

Except theses fires have miles of granite around them. Nobody remembers the 2020 bluejay and wolf fires that burned 7500 acres in 5 months in Yosemite while the creek fire did that in less than an hour and a half on the first full day.

Red 1045 acres. Rodgers 680 acres.

The Red fire was discovered on August 4, 2022 between Red Creek and Illilouette Creek at 7,800 ft. elevation. It is a lightning caused fire that is burning in the 2001 Hoover Fire footprint. Fire crews are assessing natural barriers, like granite, to confine and contain the fire. There are no trail closures and no threat to infrastructure. The Red Fire along with the Rodgers Fire are being managed under a type 3 organization.

Smells really Smokey today here in Soulsbyville above Sonora #TuolumneCounty

The #RodgersFire and #RedFire are naturally caused lightning fires in the wilderness with no threat to structures or critical infrastructure.

The burn pattern on both fires can be described as mosaic, meaning patches of fire spread across the landscape. The fire is cleaning up dead and downed fuels on the ground to make room for new healthy growth. Fires that burn in a low to moderate intensity allow for new plant growth, healthier soils, and increased water availability, leading to an all-around healthier forest.

The Red Fire is 1,045 acres with the most active portion along the northwest perimeter of the fire. The Rodgers Fire is approximately 680 acres with crews working to hold the fire west of Rodgers Creek.

We all have a little history, right? But the #RedFire and the #RodgersFire are burning in areas with little to no fire history. These fires are clearing the forest of heavy fuel loads brought on by decades of fire suppression, long-term drought, and climate change - reducing the potential of future large catastrophic fires.

Red Fire - 1,045 acres
Rodger Fire - 700 acres

Fire crews gained 10% containment on the #RodgersFire using a combination of handline, making use of natural barriers, and water bucket drops from helicopters. The crews worked to secure a portion of the southern edge where fingers of fire have stretched down off the lip of Rodgers Canyon. Crews cleared areas of brush in order to secure the southern edge and bring the focus on the fire’s northeast progression.
The #RedFire continues to make progression north and northwest. Crews work to hold the trail system along Illilouette Creek with much success. There have been a few spot fires and slop-overs that were recovered with a combination of handline and water from hose lay. Firefighters plan to extend hose lay along the western edge of the fire’s perimeter to “lock off” that area.

The #RedFire is 1,046 acres with 10% containment
The #RodgersFire is 715 acres with 10% containment

While still using confine and containment strategies on the #RodgersFire and the #RedFire, additional resources have been ordered to achieve objectives. One objective on the Red Fire is to keep the fire east of the Illilouette Creek to reduce smoke impacts to Yosemite Valley. A Hotshot crew has been brought in to hold fire on the trail system that goes to Lower Merced Pass Lake. Once this objective has been achieved, or a higher priority fire takes place, they will be released. Hotshot crews generally consist of 20 members who are assigned challenging parts of the fire.
With Labor Day weekend approaching, we hope to mitigate the smoke impacts to Yosemite National Park from these fires.
