We’ve tended to just get morning daily acreage updates. As of this morning Red was 6,056, Rodgers 2,541, Aspen 26. Red is the only one putting out much heat on satellite.

Reading the Caltopo dots, it looks like the fire is fairly well contained to the North, no threat to the Valley, but jumped a couple creeks as it’s headed SW. There’s a fair amount of consumables in that direction before it hits the Horizon/Horse/Buena Vista ridges. Might have got some rain today and precip/thunderstorms are in store for the next few days, hoping for the best.

Fire Update: September 8, 2022, 8am
The #RedFire (6,082 acres) and #RodgersFire (2,552 acres) Both are being managed for multiple objectives. Trail closures are associated within these fire areas. For more information, visit:

Red Fire: Red Fire Information - InciWeb the Incident Information System

Thunderstorms have moved through the park in the last few afternoons, and several small fires have been detected. These include the #AlderFire, near Alder Creek, and the #RanchFire, east of Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. Both of these fires are being fully suppressed. There are no closures associated with these fires.

Smoke:
Smoke from the Red Fire will impact air quality throughout the Merced River drainage from Yosemite Valley westward to Lake McClure as well as areas of southern Yosemite NP southwest towards the central valley. Largest smoke impacts will be in within the park with short-term AQI reaching Unhealthy for most locations, and even Very Unhealthy to Hazardous for Yosemite Village. Smoke from the Rodgers and Aspen Fires will settle into the Tuolumne River and nearby valleys with Moderate-USG AQI at times from Tuolumne Meadows to Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, Hodgdon Meadows, and to Groveland and nearby areas, primarily during the morning.

Light smoke will also impact Lee Vining and Mammoth Lakes at times. Smoke from Yosemite NP fires and other fires in California will also contribute to smoke impacts along the foothills, including the Mariposa area.

With the ongoing heat wave and a brief thunderstorm, we have had increase in fire activity.
There are now multiple active wildfires in Yosemite National Park. A Type 2 Incident Management Team, CA Interagency Incident Management Team 10, has arrived in Yosemite to assist with a potential increase in initial attack, logistical needs, and operations of these fires. Firefighter and public safety continue to be one of our main priorities.

High temperatures are anticipated to continue today. More seasonable conditions are expected to move into the area over the weekend, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms due to moisture from Hurricane Kay. Several small fires have been detected over the last few days, and isolated smokes may be visible to residents and visitors. These include the #AlderFire, near Alder Creek, and the #RanchFire, east of Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. Both of these fires are being fully suppressed. There are no closures associated with these fires.

Smoke:
Smoky conditions have been common in Yosemite Valley during the morning hours due to smoke from the Red Fire that is draining down the Illilouette Creek basin and into the Yosemite Valley. Cloud cover and easterly winds can delay this dispersion of smoke and create lingering air quality issues into the afternoon

Yesterday, Yosemite Valley also received smoke from the Mosquito Fire that is burning in the Tahoe National Forest in Placer County. Smoke from this fire settled into the northern San Joaquin Valley, and northwest winds pushed this smoke southward and eastward into Yosemite National Park. In addition, rain showers and thunderstorms to the east of Yosemite Valley brought easterly outflow winds and cooler temperatures at higher elevations. This trapped the smoke within Yosemite Valley and led to a significant increase in particulate matter (smoke).

Similar conditions are possible throughout the upcoming weekend with potential for prolonged smoke impacts within Yosemite Valley and throughout the region as cloud cover helps trap smoke closer to the surface. Daily Smoke Outlooks will remain available to help guide when the best air quality is expected, available at Current Smoke Outlook for Yosemite NP.
