If those detection systems identified homes or neighborhoods without defensible space before a fire starts, they’d be truly helpful.

I’d have thought that would be done by now. The imagery and GIS platforms exist (and have for a while now) to do just this. I get a nationwide coverage would be difficult, but something on a regional/state basis with useful updates could be done.

lol - yeah and then what. Knock on their doors and tell them something they dont already know? Look I like technology but none of these wui communities burning down is a surprise. I do feel a bit for the folks 1/2 mile down range whose homes burn due to conflagration because those truly in the WUI dont harden their homes.
Humans think it will never happen to them and then blame everyone but themselves when it does.

The EFA sats are set up to change the game of fire sat mapping/monitoring/detection. Looking forward to see how the next few years develops with the deployment of their 3 sats and future ones.

Question for anybody who may be familiar with it, but has anybody here ever used IGNIS for a mapping tool? It seems alot like a mix between field maps and caltopo, I’ve found it to be pretty useful so far. Im assigned to a fire in colorado and its the first I’ve heard of it. Im good with arcgis, caltopo, fieldmaps and avenza. I think I’ve covered all those over my career, but just curious about thoughts and input on its use. Wether its user friendly. Its free.

Used it last year for the 1st time. I was able to screen mirror it to a medium size TV a BC had and the drone operators modified the drop pattern of the ping pong balls during several night firing operations to match the fire effects with the terrain.
If you have StarLink anytime a new IR Perimeter gets posted you can see it in close to real time on the 3D map.

Ok, thanks. Ive been playing with it and the perimeter map overlays are awesome. Theyve been e tremely helpful in tracking along dozer lines and if does go to real time with the IR, so that reduces guess work.

IGNIS is great app, developed by wildland firefighters. Bought by Bridger a couple years ago. Bridger recenlty got another IR AC contract. Look for IGNIS to continue to grow with its day to day mapling use and direct link to IR AC for streaming.
