GIS and INCIDENT MAPPING

First off, you guys working with bleeding edge tech are doing a great job presenting what you can get your hands on. Thank you!

I’m not saying the content is the same, but the source matters. Govt release of info carries a different weight, responsibility, and consequences. JMO but if there is hesitation from CF to release it, if it avoids “issues,” so be it.

It has been several days now, and still no perimeter of the Mill fire, meanwhile the Mountain fire perimeter is updating all the time.

The mill fire is likely an active crime scene. CF is very protective of any information being released in this case. Also, I’m sure they are still working on notifications. My understanding is that most of the perimeter has burned houses and possible fatalities in it. Perhaps one of the issues is that making sure people on Wildland fire forums have an updated map is low priority.

Exactly. As with all the large agencies, firefighter effectiveness and public safety are lower priority than public relations and politics.

It’s been day two of a team taking over the mill, the mill perimeter has minimal to no growth in the past 24 hours… the map that got put out yesterday is still validated…

Also a very good point.

We’ve thought about adding import support for network links, and will likely get there at some point. We recently added the ability to import vector layers separate from the data actually residing on a saved map, and a network link would tie in with that. However KML is a huge spec and our support would have to be limited to what we can currently import via standard KML files, which doesn’t include things like GroundOverlays (aka georeferenced images).

Sorry. I meant that the perimeter of the Mill fire has not appeared on the online mapping tools, whatever magic they use to get it there. You can certainly see it on the IAP map if you go download it.

Probably won’t get the Courtney perimeter for the NEU-McCourtney with the house burning…

Kind of undercuts the argument that people shouldn’t find out their house burned via social media.

And there yeah have it, full circle…all the arguments have so many holes in them, the biggest is zero consistency.

Your problem is you only see the issue from your point of view. I guess if you run a YouTube channel and are trying to get subscribers… well more content would help right?

Feels weird to suggest people want to milk perimeters for clickbait videos or whatever when (A) that kind of thing thrives on the fear, uncertainty, and doubt that come with slow trickles of information, and (B) you’re replying under a tweet of CalFire showing someone’s house burning down on Twitter, like that isn’t the ACTUAL sort of content that gets people clicking and watching.

I think that was a pretty rude comment.

@norcal74 seriously? you went there? You obviously have no idea who or what I am about. I defended an agency with holding images of home burning etc., yet here we have an official twitter account from a government source doing it. I am talking about the perimeter location of an active fire, someone else lumped in the part about homes burning and dead people as part of that intel being withheld. I said they are not on the same level of protection. Yeah, I am youtube famous, all 443 subscribers. Good grief.

I do think Norcal and I could have a pretty good convo over lunch. I’m paying, and no, it won’t be livestreamed.

Folks, please keep the convo civil. There is absolutely no call and no justification to start throwing stones. It is ok to disagree with someone, what is not ok is to start being rude or questioning people’s motives for making a comment on their position.

Was not aimed at you…

It does undermine the idea of keeping info tight when you post a building burning down. Just sayin.

I think you should come on The Lookout and do an interview. I promise not to edit it to slant toward my views, and you can tell my audience about all of my blind spots. The invitation is always open. We can even do some sort of ‘secret witness’ backlit camera and edit your voice if you want to stay anonymous.

Hi folks. I don’t post too often but I look at this site almost every day and follow many of the threads. I follow this particular thread because I am FOBS qual’d and it started out talking about maps, mapping, etc. I certainly respect everyone on here but this thread has veered way off of the original topic. Is there any chance that it will get back on the original track? Thank you.
