HI-Maui-Lahaina ???

The numbers of people that died are from those found outside buildings so far. No interior searches have started due to safety and hazmat issues.

Wondering if there’s any word if Calfire might be sending support crews to Maui.

The majestic 150-year-old Banyan tree in Lahaina still stands following destructive Hawaii wildfires. #MauiFires

I was there on vacation and can say this sounds consistent with what I saw, small fire north of the bypass looked under control. When we got into town, 5 min later, there was active building to building propagation. 15 years and this fire was in the top 3 most aggressive fires I have seen. I firmly believe that we in California would have had the same result, no amount of manpower was going to stop this once it established in the structures.

With the conditions on the ground and the road conditions due to 2 days of 60-80mph winds there were no evacuation routes. I don’t know how many weather stations they have in the area, but I would bet there were gusts over 80. I was in a Camero getting absolutely tossed around. I got out using a farm road to the north, but many of those areas were already blocked off from that egress point.

I got ahold of some open satellite data from Maxar and made this YouTube video of the Lahaina area, showing damage block by block. Really a terrible scene, with so much trauma to come, but I am hoping this is helpful. https://youtu.be/U0zrM1AxsGI

Hope it survives. Looks pretty scarred. Not sure how fire adapted these trees are?

I hope more than anything that is not the case here. Hard to live with that.

So heart wrenching. They lost at least 2 rigs. This type 1 and a type 6 in lahaina…we just placed an order and the leaf time is now a woping 42 months! I hope they weren’t thin on apparatus.

What is the status on the fire? Containment? I’m deeply involved in moving right now and this is about all the news I get. I just moved out of Santa Rosa, CA after 33 years. I saw Coffey Park first hand. My heart goes out to those folks.

Son just texted another fire started in Kaanapali. They don’t have a scanner for any of the emergency services on Maui, only the big island, so can’t confirm 100%. Does anybody have access to satellite heat signatures for maui?

There are no obvious fire GOES fire detections on Maui in the last 6 hours.
That does not mean that there were no fires.
Fires in light fuel may need to be more than 5 acres to be detectable in some circumstances.

Could be. Your feature is clearer in the 3.9 micron band alone. Your color scale is much sharper than the greyscale on the RAMMB Slider. :+1:

It’s scarred but appears to have a healthy head of canopy on it from veiws from the air. It should survive.

The New York Times reports that there was a new fire in Kaanapali (a town immediately north of Lahaina) near a county fueling station that was preparing to distribute fuel to residents. Evacuations were triggered. Maui County officials said the fire was 100% contained by 8:30 PM (2030) .
The image below shows an elevated signal in GOES Band 7 (3.9 microns, the “fire band”).

I believe a lot of Hawaii public service radios are encrypted.
