South Ops Weather-2023

totally reminiscent of growing up in Oklahoma as well! it usually takes me 2 or 3 tries to get the pictures and vids to load.

funnel cloud was spotted just outside of Oakdale… which isn’t the first time.

The radar predictions had it coming in hard up the hill (Strawberry) but it #ropped to the south. Not even a little wind. Hope all are safe down the hill.

Monterey County. Expanded evacuation zones west of Salinas to Castroville. Highway 68 near impassible. Highway 1 closures. Limited ground access to peninsula when it crests. Double whammy.

The Salinas River at Spreckles is expected to crest by (revised) 6pm Mar 17 at 26.3 ft. HWY 1 is still being diverted to the 129, and will probably remain so, indefinitely, due to multiple factors, including the Pajaro Levee breach. HWY 68 is open at Salinas, with possible detours near downtown.

As the subtropical storm develops near the central coast on Tuesday, it will spread strong winds across much of Southern Operations area. This will likely be the highest impact storm of the season for South Ops when it comes to the entire combination of strong-damaging winds, high rain fall rates, and low elevation snow behind the front. There will be a higher than normal risk of water spouts and tornadoes as the sounding shows potential for super cells.

INCREASINGLY SERIOUS HIGH WATER prospects in what is shaping up to possibly be a record Kings River runoff season have led the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Sacramento District to announce plans to begin a rare flood release into old Tulare Lakebed. The USACE decision Saturday will mean that flood release flows from Pine Flat Dam will be increased starting at 5 a.m. Monday.

Releases growing to 1,500 cubic feet per second (c.f.s.) at Army Weir north of Lemoore into the lower Kings River’s Clark’s Fork-South Fork system will begin taking the flood flows to the former lakebed in Kings County. Those South Fork flows are expected to begin in Kings County Tuesday morning and reach 1,500 c.f.s. by Thursday afternoon. They are anticipated to continue indefinitely, USACE officials said, possibly lasting until sometime in the summer.

A little more detail on the Tulare Lake Bed. Lemoore is just beyond the northwest corner. Hanford is just out of sight to the north. The historical Tulare Lake covered all of this, but the lakebed target is shown in large print on the bottom left. Note that the Tule River adjoins these fields from the bottom right side, south of Corcoran.

The orange box was “Plan A”. The 4 or 5 percolation basins and cachements were supposed to be sufficient to hold back the tide without having to let more water go freely south from Lemoore switchhouse.

Plan B means diverting water into channels in the green boxes. This operation is expected to last weeks.

A discreet super cell developed over the LA Basin today and produced a tornado in Montebello. I was tracking the storm at the time, saw the tornado signature on velocity, and confirmed via College Peak webcam that a tornado was in progress. It was not warned by NWS probably because the difficulty that comes with meager supercells not producing strong radar returns.
