Across the Eastern most dozer line per divison.

I suggest they go back up there and un-repare them lines.

Without a map section it’s hard to know exactly where that is. Eastern most direct containment dozer line would have been the piece from Clark’s Grade down to the 07 rd. There’s 2 more contingency lines we put in to the east of that. The next one would be the ridge east of Mile creek and the last being way east about 4 ridges over tying in Mill Creek to the 06 rd. But again all contingency lines had been put into repair status.

Agree it’s hard to know as described but division did state Section 11 I believe.

It must be a horrible feeling putting in so much work on line for several days only for the fire to slop over it. Thank you to everyone who tried to make a stop there & with the weather the next few days safety should be the number one priority.

I live in Running Springs. Was headed back home from Big Bear via North Shore Drive and snapped this.

Did it jump the lines or is it still within the footprint? I know of small spots over the line on the North end.

Looks like the South side of the Santa Ana drainage is taking off now below AO, not good

So it did jump the dozer line in section 11 above hwy 38

If you reference the ops map in Romeo and uniform, the open line has nothing direct on it for the vast majority. While some areas experienced heavy downpour, these areas got very little precipitation. Lightning fires popped up in bear Creek drainage and above jenks lake within just a couple hours of the storm.
Going direct on those open areas was turned down by numerous crews for valid reasons, no one was demobed for those decisions.

Inversion in full control. Smoke being pushed to the ground…

If you have been along 18 through the “Artic Circle” and looked down… you are not surprised by this fire waking up. The team that was there and the one that took over knew and anticipated this occurring. Contingency line is in place east of the 18 all the way from Green Valley to BB. Same is true for the area around AO. A lot of time was spent with the folks from the BDF who have a lot of experience in that country and no one could see any way to get down into Bear or Santa Ana to get the fire when it slowed down. Most everyone there knew that 18 would be the eventual control line. It is what is… was just not worth the risk for no return.

Evacuation orders for Boulder Bay, west end of the Village area of Big Bear. If the fire continues at the current rate, the mitigation efforts of the Bluff Lake area will be for naught.

Yes…but…the fire is active to the east. The Butler and Butler 2 were worrisome in 2007 for that fuel load below the Arctic Circle. Now the chance for it to become a crown fire on the bluff coming from the Santa Ana drainage from the east, into the greater Big Bear community is a concern, as it burns up slope towards 2N10.

Don’t doubt that for a minute. Really tough piece of ground with an array of poor options to choose from. Hopefully the work that was done and the planning will help reduce the impact. The Bluff Mesa should slow it down on that side?

Bluff mesa is extremely healthy due to the great work done by the BDF. Numerous control lines are in place. Should be a great area to make a stand.

The bluff mesa is very conducive for fire control. There is also a large amount of contingency line in that area. Additionally it is on the back side of a ridge that shelters it from the up canyon winds. Now that the sun has set the down canyons will set in which will additionally support fire control. This is not an unexpected event. The reason for the 3 dozer lines down from the mesa bluff area are to keep the eastern push from continuing. This would keep most of big bear from a threat. As far as I can tell this is still in section 11 west of the east side of the mile creek drainage. There is a good dozer line on that east ridge that should hold through the night with the line in mesa bluff also holding this should not be a difficult situation to keep well south of Big Bear Proper. This was bound to happen at sometime over the next 30 days.

There has been great mitigation work done on the bluff mesa for years. But what we are seeing with fuel moisture at such low levels and a very warm dry summer the fuel reduction work may not matter(IMHO). I watched the Bridge Fire go from the Cow Canyon area to Wrightwood in 2 hours. Hoping that this does not do this to Big Bear.

I understand why that would be a consideration, but that was under a very rare unstable atmosphere and a different fuel type with a slightly different slope exposure. When you add all these things together and the fact that it still only ran about 2-3 k today I really don’t see the type of fire run into big bear like the Bridge. I can 100% understand why some would be concerned being the Bridge was only 40 miles away.
