CA-BTU-Dixie?

Related to your article, having been involved in related soil work, I’ll note that one factor that can make soil burn severity lower in reburned post fire plantations vs. untreated areas is that there tends to be very poor soil horizon development in plantations compared to untreated areas. No soil, no soil to burn.

The hydrants in Chester are working. I can attest to that personally, been getting water from there for three days for water tenders… There is a waterworks guy working tirelessly to keep the system working.

CalFire IMT-3 took command of the Dixie fire this morning. Not sure of the reason.

I believe they were taking control of the newly created north zone of the fire.

According to NOPS, as of 0700 this morning.

Unified command consists of: CAL Fire IMT 3 (See), and Type 1, CA Team 4 (Opliger) & Lassen Volcanic National Park. CAL Fire Team 3 in command of West Zone, CA Team 4 in command of East Zone.

There is no mention of a “North Zone” so it might still be on paper, being decided, or dropped. The change in Cal Fire IMTs should be part of the normal “14-days on assignment + travel” agreement, except under extenuating circumstances.

This morning’s briefing:

It sounds like they made 3 sectors of the West Zone, all under IMT-3: Butte Sector, Lassen Sector, and Westwood Sector. They go over the structural changes at about the 24:45 min mark.

I can not remember any time a Cal Fire Team has rotated out after 14 days, I don’t believe they have that policy.

Has there been any mention of Janesville? The winds don’t seem to be favorable for that town today.

So they still broke it down into three zones, but it seems they still remain with the two IMTs. West side having two sectors under CalFire team 3 and east zone being the Westwood sector under CA team 4

He didn’t mention Janesville directly, but did voice concern the fire might run between the Sheep and Moonlight burn scars.

Morning Briefing 24:50 into it. OSC states that this is “unique” and the first time a CalFire team has transitioned with another CalFire Team. Because NWCG and other LG and All-Hazards IMTs use the same 14+ for teams I assumed (possibly incorrectly) it was completed for that reason. Regardless, for the first time for CalFire it occurred. I do realize they have been at it for longer than 14, and that might be a reason that after XX number of days fatigue needs to be mitigated.

There are still two zones. CalFire IMT 3 has changed the organization within their zone to something I have not seen nor heard of since Yellowstone. They stated they have done it previously and would like to institute it again. Others may have more experience in how CalFire has implemented this previously. It might be a good “General Discussion” topic to start such as “CalFire and Their Use of Sectors” because it does not belong in the middle of the Q&D thread.

Within the West Zone there will be 3 Sectors. Each Sector will be managed by a Deputy Operations Section Chief (DOSC1). Within each Sector will be one or more Operational Branches (OPBD). Under the OPBDs will be the division or groups. Divisions or Groups are managed by a Division/Group Supervisor (DIVS). So, organizationally it will be OSC1 → DOSC1s → OPBDs → DIVS.

I evacuated from the airport in Chester as the fire was working its way north up the runway … and now I’m about a mile south of Standish, as Janesville five miles to the west gets an evac warning for the fire heading east.

Sorry folks, this fire is obviously following me. Next time I’ll sit out in the middle of the lake.

(On a side note, the Internet just went down, though cell is still up).

that was my first thought one of there engines burnt while parked in station

In looking at GOES-17 and the IR tracking flight, it seems like the fire has made a pretty aggressive push east and is now pushing the outer boundary of the Moonlight Fire scar. Anyone else seeing that?

Calfire does not adhere to that policy

Would you mind sharing links? I closed that window dang it! I’m watching the FLIR cams on Twitch and there are some big runs… I just can’t get oriented. Thanks
