I wouldn’t be surprised in the fixed wing were grounded because they were not doing much good except point protection as we saw with the La Panza Comm Site. No reason to spend $$$ on retardant when the fire is just going to blast passed it.
If as seems likely this thing burns until it runs out of fuel or the weather changes it will not be the first Day after Day after Day fire on the LPF.
Some of the worst sites from a brush perspective are owned by the government. I agree you can’t expect Crown and ATC to do anything or care, but when your sites are owned by a huge county or a certain Department of Forestry and Fire Protection you’d expect to see more being done.
I think a big issue is the fracture between orgs - at the LG level it can be hard getting your county fire department and your comms folks talking, and don’t get me started at the rift between CalOES and CDF… When responsibilities are frayed and fuzzy it’s hard getting folks on the same page. I know this one from experience too…
Hope all the work at La Panza isn’t in vain. We’re going to find out tonight!
same story with the rx burning - it’s one thing to see it needs to be done - quite another to actually make it happen because there’s so many god damned stakeholders who have absolute non negotiable’s that directly conflict with each other
“Hearing from Radio Traffic sounds like Engines are going to do Structure Protection around the areas of Bates Canyon Road, Foothill Road, Cottonwood Canyon Road.”
If they’re worried about down there, we might be at 100k acres pretty damn quick
This will likely be the outcome. And in all honesty this will be an easier fight on the north end if it does that. However, the NW edge has really no favorable opportunities to hold it. Southern edge is the same. However it hasnt had as much growth the last 24hrs, but there’s so much open line out there…any crew that goes to this fire needs to be on their A game. We all know this section of California is notorious for rapid changes in fire behavior and we dont have much luck holding fire in the middle of the ranges until favorable weather or a change in fuels.
And yeah, companies… remove the brush around the damn com sites pre season. We talk about this every fire and then stare intensely at the Alert Ca footage everytime the fire front moves through. Alert Ca has some innovative staff, maybe they can help coordinate each time they install at a comm site. Would be a good PR win for them on top of their fame the last 4 years.
I just watched the column collapse on the LaPanza 2 camera - amazing to watch in the 15 minute camera. The heat building and the column collapsing creating the outflow and spread of the fire was wild.
One last thing, CAL FIRE is in UC now with the impacts to the SRA. I wouldnt be suprised if we see a IMT activation from them if the fire continues to move in most directions at its own will over the coming days. This has been a challenging topic for last few years in the executive ranks of the fed and state. But, this might not be a bad idea if the two IMTs and SBC can have some positive synergy.
