CA-YNP-Washburn?

Looked at the Wawona RAWS and saw the Washburn Fire is basically burning under good RX conditions. The peak Probability of Ignition never gets over 70%.

I know things are dry, and this is impossible in our current political climate, but when it comes down to it, the fire is basically backing and flanking across the landscape like it would if we were stripping it out. And we wouldn’t have to be taking on the gnarly slopes of the S. Fk. Merced at this time of year if we were doing it on purpose.

Can you imagine how much easier/safer it would be to burn this ground at this time of year if you had a fraction of the millions we have spent chasing this thing to put into prep, snagging, and line construction. And if you had unlimited access to Type I helicopters while you were doing the job?

And what about the public relations? Instead of CNN showing video of sprinklers set up to ‘protect’ fire-adapted giant trees, they could be showing crews coaxing a low-intensity fire thru the stand, talking about the bold action we are taking to save the forests.

P.S. Probably not when headed into a heatwave, in a historic drought, though who knows if it’ll ever end…

I am not asking for anyone to list all the reasons this shouldn’t/can’t happen. Just writing science fiction here and asking people to imagine the alternative space we need to live in if we are going to achieve the magic annual acreage numbers people in Sacramento are telling the public we are going to burn in the very near future.

These two things totally stood out to me when I was reading tonight’s update and you just put into words what I couldn’t. I enjoyed reading your post and imagining the same. Ty

Interesting. Not sure I’d categorize long-range spotting as moderate fire behavior, though I’m also not sure what’s becoming of those spots given the relatively slow growth of the fire - at least as of the last acreage update. For all the intense heat it’s been putting out and its impressive column, it doesn’t seem to be moving very fast - at least so far. We’ll see what happens this week with the forecast increase in temps and winds.

Definitely still cause for concern.

-Mod Note-

I have moved the fire behavior discussion posts and Rx conversation to the correct thread. Please carry on over there. We are not opposed to the discussion but it clogs up the fire thread.

Prescribed Fire thread here…https://forums.wildfireintel.org/t/prescribed-fire-in-current-climate-reality/21565/21
Thank you and carry on.

I hope those 2 excavators with thumbs, feller bunchers and log loaders are in a safe spot.

The amount of smoke/convection this “little” 2700 acre timber fire is producing since the beginning speaks to how dense the fuels are at the ground. It will be interesting to see what remains after.

Much of that could be attributed to the windstorm that hit the area in Jan 2021, as SteepNrocky mentioned upthread. The damage was fairly extensive. That’s the first thing I mentioned to a Yosemite ranger when she informed me of the start last Thursday, and she agreed, it could get hairy.

Scanner folk, there has been an additional Air Tactics FM ordered, 167.8125. Without the 220, not sure on its assignment, if it’ll eventually replace the 166.6125 (rare but not unheard of with team assignments,) or supplement as an Air command, (also rare I’d say for a fire this size, however not out of the question considering the airspace complexity this thing might get.) Or it might just be back-pocketed for what-ifs. @apx8000 @trishaswcfirewx

The fire really woke up around 05:00 this morning on the Deadwood 2 Cam - did it spot across the river?
