South Ops Weather - 2025

Speaking of the weather and flying NY Times Sunday edition had front page article on LACOFD air program and interviewed their most decorated pilot (former 160th Night Stalker pilot before coming over so has seen some sh!t). Over the eaton during IA they lost 100 foot altitude free fall, the sensor in the tranny have an alert of no fluid because it was all displaced while they were dropping out of the air. Said it was the craziest thing he had ever been through in weather event.

Will have to say - @anvilhead’s RH predictions seem to be bearing out. Some of the readings in SDU are pretty amazing for CA standards - 3 and 4 percent even in the relative coastal zones like Escondido are only 5%. That’s AZ stuff where I am now!

Cuca Ranch near Palomar Mountain is currently sitting at 3% RH.

Dew point / RH and keeping in mind temperatures are not at maximum levels yet… widespread 1-5% this afternoon… Very damaging to plants.

so are the santa ana events done for now?

Nope…not for SDU. They extended our Red Flag warning until tomorrow evening and we are expected another good push late tonight through tomorrow with gust 70-80 in the windier locations…

Including the cities of Orange, Pine Valley, Julian, Fontana,
Running Springs, Escondido, Idyllwild-Pine Cove, Banning,
Crestline, Rancho Cucamonga, Poway, and Moreno Valley

One negating factor for initial rain totals this weekend is that the boundary layer is very dry from 20 days off offshore flow.

And there’s limited moisture above the boundary layer:

Well… that’s a bummer.

We got a very dramatic 2 inches of snow in meadow lakes yesterday evening with an impressive lightning show then some pirouetting cars followed that act.

For the areas that got little rain, what are the forecasted winds as the low moves east?
